I don’t care what dragons REALLY are. Dragons should only breed with fellow dragons, not lowly inferior creatures like humans, trolls, elves, etc.

Did you know, there was a chart released showing what D&D fantasy races could produce offspring as well as which ones would be born sterile or not? Unsurprisingly, likely thanks to Bards and the existence of Dragon-lineage sorcerers, Dragons were apparently the most compatible with all of the lesser creatures.
