DP stacking ratio?

DP seems to be stacking but not 100% + 100% anyone know the maths going on?

By the time you reapply DP, part of the initial dot will have expired, so your ticks upon reapplying DP will not be 2x the initial tick.

Not sure if that gets at the issue here, hope it does.

I don’t think that is the case if you save 100 insanity then dump it in 2 globals, or use damnation.

It’s exactly the case. Reapplying dp does not reset the tick rate of the tick you’re already on.

Pressing dp twice back to back will deal 2x dp’s worth of damage of (1gcd + 6 seconds) of time.

Pressing DP DP Damnation will deal 3x DP of damage over (2gcd + 6 seconds) of time.

So with 3DPs is it 3x the ticks, or 3X the damage of a single tick?

Neither.

If DP ticks n times, applying DP while DP still has ticks left will make the new DP tick n+1 times, for the total damage of 1 DP + whatever was left on the dot that was replaced.

So in this example you’d cast DP once, it wouldn’t tick, then a second time, and it would tick very shortly after the application for (2DP/[n+1]) damage, then you’d apply the 3rd DP, which would deal a total of 3DP-(2DP/[n+1]) over n+1 ticks, and a partial at the end based on your haste.

This is basically exactly how ignite works for fire mage, except with the addition of haste because ignite is not a haste affected dot. It is complicated, but it’s complicated because it’s not supposed to matter.

Your focus should be on casting DP whenever you want, to optimise for the goal you want to achieve, safe in the knowledge you cannot lose DP damage by recasting DP too early or late or whatever.
