Downtime like it's 2007 and they have no idea what they're doing

So is it just me or is it like they’ve been doing this for like 20 days rather than 20 years? Do they literally let go of all their developers and product managers and recruit at the colleges before each release so they can do multiple patches again and again as if it’s the norm?

i dont understand why they need to take the game down each patch, like all the other games that exist implement patches while fricking live, i mean at least have the patches ready to do all the process of implementation automatically. 3 hours down time makes no fkn sense in 2024… they are literally using the technology they had back in 2008

feel free to learn to do Dev work and go do it better then. oh, not your wheelhouse? stop the QQ’ing then. dev work/tech never goes as planned 9 times out of 10 and issues arise that have to be fixed.

If only there was a PTR and early access to fix exactly what you’re talking about…

LMAO tells me how little you know or how shotty your work is. This is EVERY release. Like every release for the last 20 years. RElease, delay, patch, delay, emergency, delay. Look at today, already extended twice. Odds on time of restore?

I have never played an MMORPG that didn’t take servers down to patch them. ESO, New World, WoW, EQ, EQ2, City of Heroes, SWG, SW:TOR, List goes on. Maybe your talking about non MMORPGs.

It’s 2024, 20 years after the release of WoW and people are still getting emotional over Maintenace and bug fixes.

First - I love your character name. That’s just awesome lol

Second - Yes. There’s a reason why Release Management and code check-in/promoting is kind of its own discipline. What folks don’t realize is that there’s localization done for all the places that the game is Live, that there is a process behind the scenes that things have to go through.

Still, though, I would love to see that process improved upon since we’ve been doing this same ol’ maintenance thing since 2004 without any real/significant uplifts, ya know?

Your comment hits it on the head most likely. It’s probably monolithic is someway (obvious statement I know) rather than a more scalable tech. It is one of the oldest out there so I would guess that impacts it. Why change when you’re still making money

They’re probably not the same devs anymore.
I’ve heard that legacy code is unappetizing.

And therein lies the point, why haven’t we learned from our past mistakes? :frowning:

Do people not realize this also sucks as much for the devs as it does for us. Probably even more, since more down time for them means more work and more stress, where for us it just means more whining on a forum?

People act like the devs enjoy maintenance. “Hey Bob, lets extend downtime some more just to make them cry”

This might be the key.

When you’re onboarded on the team and find out they’re using an old code base that isn’t supported anymore :sob:

(literally me two years ago)

Then please look up development 101 and you’ll see. You can’t update a Production level system with changes as things will break… Then people flood forums/support.

Do you realize it’s because of them not checking in the first place?

Ah, at last we’re feeling the no ragrets remote work generations taking over jobs with their low standards.

I totally agree. I work in technology and there’s so many opportunities for this whole process to be improved whether it’s CI/CD or additional virtualization.

That’s because it is, or would you rather they went back to taking the game down for days on end? Sometimes even a week.
