The shadowlands should have been a place we went every expansion once in a while to explore a new zone as a 0.x content. A secondary story that would get more content and maybe tie in eventually with the main story.
I don’t know why blizzard has the tendency to make things that should be kept surface level as much as we can as the afterlife and turn it into a whole expansion.
If it was side content, we could still have the same information and the same story to continue without butchering the whole afterlife.
Hell I remember I cringed when the maw wasn’t something akin to a 3 man timed randomized dungeon. Where you’d go to do one or two objectives and get out before you got messed up by the forces because you know it’s freaking hell in wow but nope we just got a other zone that the characters walked around and stomped monsters necks in.
Obviously the Jailer wanted to unmake everything (thanos) and remake it in his own image or design or something. He was supposed to end the oppressive evil Warcraft story I think that people thought was toxic I’m guessing.
This would usher in a happy place where the perfect happy doo dah story of “I can do it better” would occur where friendship is magic.
That didn’t work out so they brought in Metzen as fan service to give it a proper send off before they turn Warcraft into friendcraft, or just outright end it cause Warcraft is toxic and stuff so they can make gatcha mobiles instead. Especially to that one person that spams WoW Metacritic user reviews ad naseum about how segregationist and toxic factions are and the limitations imposed in an rpg universe as if this is reality… oh no.
This concludes Padgarre’s sarcastic and cynical post that probably isn’t too far off the mark.
Speaking of when Doctor Strange and avengers could’ve easily done the same thing to Thanos as he did to Dormammu
I will never understand why in warcraft half the ““ heroes sit out of any battle and let a ragtag group of people take on the big bad.
Like well, I’m gonna sit this one out and if we all die, we all died. I’m just I’m not gonna jump in because I’m tired.
It’s like the developers, intentionally handicap the Lore and the stories for some nefarious purpose to just keep us playing instead of just all out defeating all the bad guys.
Too much cat and mouse cat plays with his mouse and doesn’t kill the mouse.
Given the development timeframe and resources used for vanilla, I’m always shocked at how expansive the game was on release and how many assets they created for it.
One of the things that head scratching now. I get graphics are better so there is more time creating and rigging an asset, but the tools are so much better.
I played FFXI at the time, and I was surprised at how big the zones were and how full they were. Zones had a lot of micro areas that just added depth. Compared to some of the starting FFXI zones where you had 2-3 connecting zones and a rare spawn. There was almost no variation in the zone itself or meaningful quests.
The story in SL was fine, it was everything else that was bad. If it had better systems and gameplay, but still kept the story/tone- it would be a very different experience.
The initial vision for Shadowlands was they gave Ion too much power as usual and he made bad decisions and overly convuluted systems and things that gave casual players a hard time, yet fun Raids while the rest of the game sucked. Torghast as a concept was metal and cool, but the execution wasn’t. It being a mandatory grind for player power and not dropping loot for casuals was so bad. Just a chore you had to do for your legendary.
There were. You could even see them. Oribos proper has pretty limited reach with vision, but in the Arbiter’s Chamber you can tons of gates scattered around in the skies, which is meant to represent the path to different afterlives.
Tutorial Isle is first because … tutorial island.
BFA is next because that’s the expansion the new leveling experience came out in.
DF is next because it’s current.
The systems were bad. The story was worse. There are very few redeeming moments in the Shadowlands story. It literally feels like Disney Star Wars, you come in optimistic, and it isn’t great but also not immediately terrible. But once it got going the story really fell in the dirt with only the odd story beat here and there being the exception. In fact, I’d argue Disney Star Wars at least had a better ending than Shadowlands did.
And they 100% need to. It was supposed to be my favorite expansion, I was sooooo hyped! The Jailer looked awesome, the idea of the Maw and the zones looked amazing, the MATERIAL WAS THERE! IT WAS LITERALLY THERE!
Then all the convoluted systems and the crapshow that was covenants, and the slow sloooow sloooooooooow drip feed content in its early days…
And the most heinous act of all…the “so called” story.
The only thing…the ONLY reason I even logged in everyday and played that crap was cause the raids were FUN!, mythic dungeons were FUN!, and combat was FUN! I can’t say nothing bad about how fun the classes were but systems we had to go thru to get them there…ugh…
Yes. They should absolutely 100% forget it exists. I still to this day havent forgave them for it. It’s too soon. i dont know when, if ever…but I refuse to forgive.
