I really hope they have such a plan that does not include cross realm garbage.
They made a huge error in judgement giving classic a launch window. It too has a development staff for getting those 60 levels up and running. Perhaps even more difficult than creating new content with the new technology.
I would have preferred they did not give the release window at all and maybe just said “beta summer 2019”.
Which is a really sucky thing and a on the face of the people begging for classic for <10 years.
Diablo 3 money supported it. Overwatch supported it. Starcraft supported it, CoD supported it, Destiny 2 supported it…etc, etc. A box cost for classic would “support it”.
People who want to dip their toes in Classic at launch, who level to 20-ish before tiring of it, will have a 20-ish toon waiting for them (some sunk-cost, if you will, time invested) when BfA’s end-of-expac blues set in. If they don’t have the 20-ish toon waiting (they wanted to dip their toes but didn’t want to pay money for it because they figured they probably wouldn’t like it) then they would be less-likely to come in at the end of expac and try it out again for another month (paying the sub) than if they did, and also less likely to start a new toon if they also had to pay a box cost and they’ll just take a break.
If they have their 20-ish toon waiting for them, and are thinking of taking a break, they’ll come back to Classic and start leveling that toon again, and maybe not take a break, or instead of taking a 3-month break from paying a subscription they take a 1 or 2 month break instead.
Every month counts – just multiply that effect over 10’s of thousands of retail players and you’ll see what I’m saying.
What would you think of all existing subs getting free access to classic but only after 2 weeks following launch, the first 2 weeks requiring a box cost?
Sounds P2W to me, if you consider the leveling-to-60 race a part of “winning” Classic, which many do.
I would probably pay it if they did that, but at the same time I don’t think they will because it would be seen (and rightfully so) as a naked P2W money grab.
Don’t care about those other games. And how many of them require sub.
A box cost has nothing to contribute to the development going on now. The only reason to want a separate sub for Classic is to soothe the egos of people raging against Current.
Why would it matter to you guys that it’s bundled in. You get access to a majority of one games content and another entire game for the same price. Some people won’t touch retail, some won’t touch classic. You’re both still going to pay 15 dollars. And, on the off-chance you ever change your mind you’ll be able to access that other game at any point and time.
There are literally no downsides to the combined sub for anyone in this equation. It’s a great idea.
HOW IS THAT A PROBLEM. If 15 dollars is going to stop a majority of potential ‘Classic’ players from playing then I guess they didn’t really want Classic did they.
Per Blizzard, doesn’t matter. The game will go on, regardless of how many people play. If you want populated servers, encourage people to roll on them,
I can see your point, perhaps. Again I’d probably pay the box cost if they did it, and I wouldn’t begrudge them their naked cash grab because business is business, but I see both sides of this kind of argument.
At the end of the day Blizzard will do what they think they need to in order to thread the needle between business decisions and quality and all that rot, and also I’m sure there are internal struggles where the P2W beancounters are salivating at people like me who are throwing money at the screen versus those who are fighting to keep WoW away from the whole micro-transactions crap.
We’ll see who wins in this case, hopefully in 3-6 months or so.
?
A Classic box cost would be something everyone must buy and have access to at the same time. Those who didn’t want to pay it could play with nothing spent but the sub after 2 weeks.
I’m not sure how true this story is. But I saw a WoW video about Classic and this youtubers experience at Blizzcon with the Demo. He said he sat next to a player who had never played Vanilla. This player was a hunter.
Within a few minutes, this hunter managed to unequip their arrows. They managed to unequip their bow and try to put it in their main slot. Now… that’s what they do in BFA. There are no arrows and bows are in the main slot. So I think BFA players may be in for a rough surprise if they started late.
This was much like my experience at Blizzcon. Players kept dying to rather silly things.
However I agree with Odin. What if a BFA player or someone who started in Cata or WoD wants to play Classic? They never tried it before? Hopefully they’re experience the same thing that happens to all of us.
You invest your first hour into the character. It’s much different than current WoW. Current WoW I’m out of the Night Elf starting zone in an hour. In an hour I may not even be out of the spawn area by that big tree in Classic! I may just be getting to the first town. I may have grouped with some folks because those damn spiders WERE EVERYWHERE… and I may have made some friends.
Hour two comes along. I have an elite quest I sure as hell can’t do solo. I have that dumb cave quest where I have to watch my step because furbolg like to sneak up on you.
All of those experiences in just a few hours! Compared to current WoW where I am a God among ants with my heirlooms.
I think some new players will absolutely hate it. I think some new players will absolutely love it because it’s so slow like an RPG. They don’t have to be addicted. Maybe they can just get their feet wet like Odin said. Then come back.
That’s the cool thing about Vanilla! I started in patch 1.10 and when I was doing MC, others were still doing MC! Even top guilds would go back to MC. I didn’t feel behind.
So that $15 plays a big part of people coming back and not having to be forced to throw down $20 start up and $15. (Wasn’t that one of the complaints about WoW? Why do I have to buy the game and pay for it monthly?).
