Don't turn the Sunwell into the Dawnwell

Warning disclosure: This thread contains Midnight spoilers, if you do not desire to see more – Do not click this thread.

So  In Midnight, we have the narrative of the Sunwell:

The Sunwell, surprise to no one — seemingly gets corrupted by the void (Go-figure) and then they have some big-ole-hold-hands with the power of friendship faction-unity moment where they have:

  • Nightelf Shandris drop a vial of Moonwell water into the Sunwell
  • Nightborne Thalyssra yeeting in a fruit from the Arcan’dor to follow
  • and the Void-elf Umbric slamming in a void-crystal …

Along with something trivial that Liadrin mic-drops in it.
Thus the void-ridden Sunwell is forevermore changed into ‘tHe daWnWeLL’

:x: The issue of this narrative:

Overall — and from what I’ve seen from scores of tremendous amounts of players — Ultimately many of us feel this is both grotesquely disrespectful and insultingly corrosive to the Blood Elves overall identity …

It feels Blizzard become less and less understanding towards the importance of upholding their races’ foundational themes, fantasies and iconic elements, and instead opt towards always sacrificing them on the altar of some obnoxious notion of “HMMPH! :triumph: This is the story we want to tell!”

  • It’s like the ‘council’ approach to the Horde — where the well isn’t notably the two interwoven immense powers of light & arcane anymore — but now some weird boring omni-well of a handful of sources ‘the super-most special of wells!’ → Which is likely to have little-to-no plot or SPIRITUAL relevance to the Blood Elves anymore, nor any power-impact & greater significance for their kingdom solely, moving forward.

As many have pointed out, all this does is further dilute the Belves’ identity, merely for the needs of an ‘Elven Unity’ plotline no one asked for …

The Sunwell is such a cool concept, it’d be tragic to repeatedly destroy or dilute it for the sake of some unity-plot #996483 ego to stroke … And honestly, so many of us are sick to death of the Warcraft universe’s immortals, great spiritual beings, founts of great power and significant artifacts being obsessively removed from the world of magic, mysticism and fantasy :upside_down_face:

:book: The better storyline for the Sunwell?

Personally, I’d much rather priests and paladins of BLOOD ELVES, all pour in unimaginable amounts of light into the well and have a full-circle thing — Where they, who all once siphoned the light of the Naaru — were now pouring light INTO the essence & heart of the Naaru, which resided deep within the Sunwell, which ultimately rebirths it.

  • It’d be reminiscent of their icon too – The phoenix, as it’d be a symbol of rebirth for a sacred power & vestige of their people.

Naturally it wouldn’t “HAVE” to be this — but it’d certainly be far better than the garbage plot they plan on going with currently …

Anyway :face_exhaling: There you have it guys.

Just pointing out that I sort of foresaw elements of this months ago. I’m sure this will play into a villains hand, in an attempt to consolidate all cosmic forces into one spot as part of a plot to do something big.

It’s the unpopular position on this board, but I’ve long argued that restoring the Sunwell was to the blood elves’ narrative benefit. Reconnecting with their heritage was a story worthier of Thrall’s Horde than a commitment to villainy and corruption would have been, and such a fall opposite the rise of the Alliance’s goodlier high elves would’ve screwed the blood elves a lot harder in the fullness of time IMO.

But time has reached fullness now and you’ve got to wonder. Homogenizing the race’s cultural center in the name of elven unity is to nobody’s benefit. The blood elves lose another aspect of their identity, the void elves lose the direction they otherwise looked set to gain, the high elves only become more irrelevant, and the night elves are forced to produce a dog for a race they shouldn’t care about in the first place. I dig the nightborne potentially baking a proper cure for their buddies’ addiction into the new well but that’s about it.

Four of the five ingredients look set to enforce the Sunwell’s status quo anyway. Who is this rebranding even for? Are they going to re-rerecord all this new blood elf dialogue hailing the Sunwell after eighteen years remembering it?

I find it impossible to believe that the Thalassians would just up and rename their well for any reason. The Sunwell has been their culture’s pinnacle as Alinta mentioned for thousands and thousands of years.

A bad guy pooping in the Sunwell is almost done as much as “…somehow the Scarlet Crusade returned”.

Just call it the Sun Toilet at this point, idgaf if it shoots rainbows out anymore.

It’s for that ‘modern writing’ style of stamping out anything that makes a person unique, interesting or diverse and instead replacing it with a non-problematic, grey, inoffensive slop.

They have pointy ears and glowing eyes, fur or fang…but everyone is human now.

Ironically, stripping all those races/cultures of their most humanizing traits. In service of a very narrow, corporate neoliberal “woke” vision of Humanity. A shallow surface of multiculturalism, with a deep ChristoEuropean inspired core. Especially with this fixation on Blond-Haired Blue-Eyed White Saviors in Golden’s “Goldens”. Even Sylvie was only evil, “because her Blond, Blue-Eyed half was ripped from her” lol!

They should have it be reborn and have An’she be a driving factor towards that as some sort of Phoenix Diety reborn in the Sunwell. A true god like elune but for the Blood elves and Tauren.

Have the Night elves and voidborn not like this and denouce An’she. (maybe elune sealed him away) but have him show a different side of the Light for the Horde to follow.

This is honestly a solid idea. We’ve been LONG overdue for an exploration of Tauren cosmology and mythos; and two of the three Horde Paladin factions revere/worship the Sun as a celestial body. I believe the Zandalari Prelates also “worship the Sun”. But they do so through an intermediary in the form of various Loa. With Rezan being the primary force of Light use, but there are others. I would assume Loa’jin will play into that at some point.

you could even tie it in with the Arrakoa , Rukhmar and the Apex civilisation from draenor, therefore give the Orcs a way into worship.

Giving the Horde A true deity that spans all if not most of their races. That can oppose the alliances god powers.

Yeah don’t do that. No one wants that, full stop.

It makes it especially, well, ‘gross’ to have both blue eyed blonde haired Jaina and Vereesa, both get a pardon on the violent purge of Dalran, and Jaina even gets to oversee it’s rebuilding!

Who. Is. This. For!

That’s what happens when you join the faction which uses a toilet-seat for an icon. I suppose the Blood Elves really always WERE fit to join the Horde.

Joke aside, I don’t care that they’re renaming the Sunwell, half so much as I care that they’re doing it NOW. The time for renaming important parts of their culture was in the aftermath of the Third War, such as when they renamed their race. If the Sunwell’s name needed to be changed, it should’ve been the first time it was reignited. Renaming it now feels weird. There isn’t even a good reason to rename it at this point. It wasn’t renamed when it became a mix of Arcane and Light, after all.

If they had renamed it to the Dawnwell back in TBC, it at least would have made sense and gave a deeper meaning to their saying Remember the Sunwell, to signify everything they had lost and the rebirth they went through when the Well was reignited again.

Yeah but you see, it’s to illustrate the Dawn of a New Age ! For all Thalassians ! Free of old grudges, free of the shackles of their past (outdated, bad, incorrect) fantasies. Free to embrace the Holy Slop.

And we shall be led to this new age by our glorious golden cryboi of the Light, Anduin Arator. Sorry, forgot the Blood Elves were Horde for a moment there, what with all the Alliance characters everywhere in Quel’Thalas and no other Horde characters in sight.

Free of Cultural Distinctiveness. Free to be just the HEs, and the culturally inferior “HEs” that needed to be saved from themselves. Free to make it easier to “include the Horde” when writing “Neutral” stories, about almost solely Alliance/Alliance-Adjascent Reps and Themes. I mean, lets not pretend that the Haranir aren’t being primed to be another Earthen. A Neutral Race that bleeds/co-opts heavily with Main Alliance Races, so that writing for those races now “is writing for both Factions”. That doesn’t mean the writing is good by any means, but that seems to be the logic behind it. Same with Calia and Arator’s use.

Oh yeah Arator is 100% the new Anduin LMAO (Most Specialest White Boy who understands both sides and serves as a narrative device to deliver the correct moral stance to the players). I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned out to be the chosen one from X’era and Velen’s prophecies, the Child of Light and Shadow and so on.

Given who Arators parents are. Thats exactly what blizz is going for. They’re about as subtle as a bull in a china shop
