Ion already explained things perfectly yesterday. Check it out. If that answer isn't sufficient I have to start questions whether people want a functioning game or just a time machine.
The compromise he mentioned will solve problems when its needed then go away when its not.
No one who actually cares about the health of the game should be upset with that.
Especially when he talked about their philosophy on things like the debuff cap.
No body wants a time machine, that argument is only used by the uneducated who can't even begin to argue a coherent point without strawmanning.
IE...you.

As you've noticed, the Classic Demo does have realm sharding. This is to let as many people as possible experience it without technical issues such as server capacity or spawn density getting in the way.
Longer term, we know how crucial it is to the Classic experience for you to see your friends when you walk into Stormwind or when you’re helping them on a quest you’ve already completed. And there should only ever be one Kazzak on a realm, no matter how many people are waiting for him to spawn.
We’re still looking at how we can best deliver an authentic Classic experience at launch, and in the weeks and months that follow - both in terms of gameplay and community. You won’t see phasing (which is tied to specific quests that don't exist in Classic) or cross-realm zones (which combine multiple realms together) in Classic. However, realm sharding is one of the best tools we have to keep realms stable when hundreds of players are swarming the same initial few zones and killing the same few mobs (like they will be at the launch of Classic). To that end, we do believe that some form of sharding may be helpful, especially in those early days. But we recognize that a cohesive world is critical to WoW Classic and are committed to bringing that to you.
but i want to be there for the big swarm! it will be awesome! please dont take that away

Stop whining. They already gave a great explanation at Blizzcon.
!@#$ idiot. They didn't give a good explanation about it. Even if it makes it and people are passive there is a chance they will try to normalize it.
You make it sound like the classic team WANT sharding. They don’t. They simply recognize it as a potential momentary necessary evil.

Reasons have been given all over this forum and on reddit. Go find it

Oh come off it. Vanilla didn't have sharding and the game still managed to survive. It may not be a perfectly smooth launch, but I'm sure Classic can survive too with 15 years of advancement in technology.
Would I like launch to go over without a hitch? Sure, that would be great. Would I be willing to put up with sharding to accomplish that? Absolutely not. You're seriously underestimating where sharding ranks in many people's opinions of what's bad for the game. For a whole lot of people sharding is many, many times worse than having to deal with crappy servers for a few days.
DON'T
PUT
SHARDING
IN
CLASSIC

Another copy and paste post instead of joining us in the discussion. Can you at least pretend to want to talk with us here or what? :(
Why no sharding (or two-hour loot trade window) or any other "Quality of Life improvements"??
Blizzard, please watch this video (3:00 min.):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0smIlSqMYs
Please STOP attempting to introduce ANY non-Vanilla game mechanics (like trade windows) or non-Vanilla gameplay-technology (like sharding).
I don't want "New Vanilla" or "Classic Vanilla" - I just want VANILLA. As J. Allen Brack said at BlizzCon 2017, it's our favorite flavor. :)
We all know when the AQ gate opening event happens that miraculously some players won't be able to see the person ringing the gong for the first time. Won't be able to see the sheer mass of people there showing up as a community. Thats what I worry about when sharding is turned on "when needed"

A time machine, we want a time machine. We want vanilla, not Ions idea of vanilla, after all he had nothing to do with the creation of that game.
