I have every single allied race unlocked and I want them to remove the requirement. As far as I’m concerned, it’s indefensible.
Races draw people to the game. They’re what you want to look like, they’re not the same thing as a mount. I know people who would like to play because races like Vulpera and Void Elf offer them something the last races didn’t, but it’s really hard to sell them on having to get to 120 on a throwaway character first and then grind diligently for a month before they can make the character they want to play.
The lore justification of needing to earn their loyalty first is nonsense, every single allied race plays a huge role in the storyline and are seen on the battlefield alongside their faction except for the two newest ones, Vulpera and Mechagnomes.
The allied race system was a terrible idea. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to increase time played metrics.
Lock the mount behind the grind, lock the heritage armor behind the grind, those things are fine. Don’t lock the ability to play the race behind an end-game grind.
Edit: I made this post without reading the thread because I post it in every thread trying to defend the allied race system, now I actually look at it and they’re removing the requirement?!
This is wonderful! This honestly fills me with joy and hope for the game’s future. And again, I already have all of the allied races unlocked. I just don’t want anyone else to go through what I had to.
There is no source. The person was talking out of his rear and relaying information without fact-checking it first and has already admitted to doing such
As someone who has unlocked every Allied Race as well, I’m happy if people can get races they want to play. We’ve had them for ages now, who cares if more people can play them?
I have all the reps needed for allied races for both factions and did the quests for all the ones I wanted and I agree rep requirement should be removed. I only wish It was done this way from the start, and maybe I would have been subscribed for most of this expansion rather than only subscribed at the start and end while not bothering to come back for 8.2
But they still aren’t terribly clear on there about requirements for anyone not privileged enough to be in the alpha
For example, the Kul Tiran requirements on the current Wowhead page show Kul Tirans having had the rep requirement removed, but appears as if you still need to complete a Nation United.
The Mechagnomes on the other hand don’t show having ever needed to complete The Machagonian Threat achievement, so you can’t tell if that was left in or not.
There are also a few that have an achievement listed both in gray as if it was removed, AND in green as if it’s a recent addition/change.
Judging by what they have listed on the page, it looks like it still depends on the allied race if you can just jump right in or if you still need to complete a prerequisite quest line.
The rep requirement should have never been there to begin with. Gating new races is dumb and it’s astounding anyone puts up with that let alone prefers it.
Then again it shouldn’t surprise me given the ardent defenders of a different part of gameplay being pointlessly gated.
ARs are also cosmetics; core races have much better racials, there’s little to no reason to pick an AR over a Blood Elf, Goblin, Dwarf, Orc, Night Elf, etc.
The only exception being HMT, those racials are on par or superior to some core races, yet they’re the least played AR Horde side.
On the other hand look at Vulpera, they have some of the worst racials and are extremely popular. Sure camp is good, but not better than Mole Machine and almost nobody picks DI.
tl;dr: most players pick races due to appearance (i.e. cosmetics) not power
A race is not something you can equip or mog after the fact.
Pretty subjective.
Maybe because it requires re-rolling a new toon? Or paying you way to do so?
Not at all, you just countered yourself with HMT.
Also - there is a big difference with races that have been in the game for > 10 years and were F2P at xpac launch … than something in the last 6 months locked behind a pay/grind wall.
I talked my brother into buying a new PC to play shadowlands, and relaxing the gates on ARs was one of the things that made the difference. So a few tryhards get mad (a very few, like pretty much only the OP), it was a barrier to new and returning players so elimination of said barrier is a good thing that I’ve already seen a tangible benefit from. For the first time since WoD I’ll have an RL person to play with again. He might have came back anyway, but I’d swear the loosening of the gate at least partly influenced his decision.
So many people are excited about this. So few people are genuinely mad. I’m about to get Zandalari and I started them knowing the grind was going away. I just want them now and will do it rather than wait. I should have them by tomorrow.
Now Vulpera, I have their achieve so I’ll probably just wait for them. Unless I want something to grind on my Zandalari, with double rep maybe I’d get it just loremastering voldun?
And I have 3 other ARs, the fact the gates are going away doesn’t diminish the fact I have them in the slightest, and I’m just glad I can get the rest for a reasonable amount of effort. Zandalari took around a week to get past the final seal and zandalar forever, and I’m nearly exalted to boot, so removing the exalted grind doesn’t make them free just makes them not stupidly grindy.
People who’ve quit or never played do not want to hear they need to wait 4-6 weeks for a race, compounded further if they needed to level a character to unlock the character that they actually want, which had to be the dumbest idea ever from its inception. I unsubbed right after I got VE because I was so sick of the character I ground them out on, I’d only done it because it was the furthest into argus, and wanted to retire it before I even started grinding VE on it. Took about 6 weeks off after that, the others weren’t as bad but the method of grind is/was pretty dumb.
No it isn’t, it’s mathematically proven, it’s called theorycrafting.
And yet you see dozens of Zandalari and Vulpera every day, races that have been available for less than a year. How often do you see Gnomes or Dwarves? Races that have been available for over 15 years.
If you’re going to do the rep grind anyway, why does it matter if they take that requirement away? It’s not like you worked extra for it, what with it already being something you’d do anyway. Not everything needs to be locked behind tedious grinding. I’ve grinded out a few of the races already, but I don’t feel like I’m being shafted by them taking the rep requirement away. BTW, things like allied races that are part of the marketing for the expacs shouldn’t be about “exclusivity”.
Also - most alliance racials are not throughput centric - so it really depends on your use case. For exampe, “every man for himself” is not particularly useful outside of PvP.
By your logic - no one in horde should play anything other than orc/troll.
Seeing them is anecdotal at best and probably not surprising people are leveling new classes with a new xp boost at the end of an xpac.
I play horde so i don’t see many alliance toons period.
You argued AR’s are basically cosmetics except HMTs which are for racials, which basically means its not just about cosmetics.
