Doesn't taking away portals ruin immersion?

I think the “time /played metric” reason is absolute bunk.

Clearly Blizzard wants to discourage us from going to old zones and cities because they’re making it a pain in the neck to get there, and removing reasons to be there.

I’m pretty darned certain that depopulating cities and past expansion zones is part of Blizzards strategy to free up computing resources, so they can be switched over to support the initial demand for Classic.

the “immersion” “makes the world feel bigger” “/played MAU metrics” stuff is just a distraction.

Hmm,From your view, wouldn’t it be better to spread the population of wow to other area so they wouldn’t have lag issues.I did have lag during the stress test part and wasn’t in the city.it got to the point I logged off.

Imagine a warehouse filled with open topped boxes. Each box can hold one or more cats… or one or more dogs, but never both at the same time. (boxes = shards)

Boxes are moderately big, they can each hold up to 40 animals (city shards, current content WQ zones, BGs, raids), most however only contain 1-5 animals (remote levelling zones, dungeon instances, solo legacy raid instances)

Right now, it’s mostly just cats (retail) in those boxes, and a few dogs (classic beta). Soon it’ll be a lot more dogs.

And because you can’t put both into the same box at the same time… if all your cats are spread out a few to a box, you’re gonna need a lot more boxes.

But if you can push a lot of those cats into the same boxes (kick them out of old expansions, old cities, old dungeons and raids) there’ll still be some low population boxes with cats, but far fewer than usual … and now all those newly empty boxes can be used for dogs instead.

Terrible analogy. I didn’t sleep well and could probably do better.
But hopefully that helps paint a picture for why I think they’re doing what they’re doing?

The point isn’t whether or not they track it. They very likely track a lot of metrics, both useful and not. The point is that, since the metric they report to their shareholders is MAU, and increasing metrics and returns for stockholders is incredibly important for any publicly-traded company, the likelihood is that they are fully willing to sacrifice other metrics to bump that shareholder key MAU metric. Them tracking those other metrics just means they know they are sacrificing them to bump MAU.

Should have left all the old portals, and expanded upon them with adding news ones for the portal room. Nothing would be lost, and only positives would have been gained. I’d never be able to get a job at todays Blizzard.

Well it takes effort to maintain a portal, they are not a set up and forget type of system. So if a portal isn’t being used enough to justify the effort to maintain it, then I could easily see it being turned off.

This, people think small things that don’t cost a lot mean nothing. I work in a convenience store we sell a ton of Lighters and phone chargers. They are small items that people lose easily and so they purchase them all the time they may seem like nothing to the customer but they make a lot of money for us. The small things can really add up

It’s annoying when you travel to a portal and find out it’s gone, but already burned your stormwind guild Cape port. The extra ones didn’t hurt anything.

Yes, taking away portals ruins immersion, for me anyway. It’s a world of magic, why wouldn’t there be portals? Duh.

Semper Fi! :us:

^ irritates me so much

Yea, makes it feel like it takes too bloody long to fly to where I want to go so I am just going to log out and go do something else. Seriously, seven and a half minute flights should NOT exist. My character should NOT be afk by the time I land.

There needs to an easy relatively fast way of getting to every corner of the world (especially as a lowbie!). And why the heck isn’t there a portal to every main city (again, this is for lowbies! you know, the ones who actually need to go to TB)?

I’m sorta okay with “slow at low levels” so long as you’re gradually building up a network of ‘better routes’ throughout the world.

But then again, low levels are so painfully slow to me that I generally avoid creating new alts, so my opinion is pretty much irrelevant.

Oh so they’re trying to fit all of the boxes into one big box even though they maybe further apart.Figures.With that then that in itself is immersive.LOL.

It’s kind of like gerrymandering, but instead of changing county line around, they’re closing bridges and creating detours to decrease the population in rural areas so that they can serve those areas with fewer postal workers.

Oh consolidation .

One thing most can agree on — removing the portals was a bad bad blizzard move
