Does your workplace get “upset” when you call out?

A corporation that can lay off thousands and turn around to rehire the positions let go is basically a zombie corporation.

Like I said before I have heard the same spiel thousands of times. The businesses that spend less money training and hiring and have higher retention rates always fair better in the long run.

Work productivity drops if existing employees have to keep training new hires.

Yeah. Cause picking out of a garbage and socialism is an even better idea. LOL.

I’ve been with my company for almost 15 years now. I travel all over the world and have an incredible rapport with my customers. Yeah after year, I have received high accolades from upper management. Most years, I have to cash out my sick time because I don’t use it all.

I recently injured my back. It wasn’t from the work I do, but it was during a trip. Almost 95% of my job, besides the travel, can be done remotely. My company would not allow me to work remotely because the personnel in the machine shop didn’t like the fact that the office workers have the capability to work remotely.

I essentially have to drive into work every day with 4 extruded herniations in my lumbar spine, and stenosis through the entire lumbar spine which forces me to walk with a walker to sit at a desk all day and answer emails. This will be one of the major reasons why I leave this company as soon as I am healthy.

Businesses suck. If you find one that treats you well, treasure it because it’s few and far between. Most employers don’t care about you beyond what you can provide for them.

If they’re making you feel guilty, that is on you. Don’t let them. If you hardly miss days, one shouldn’t feel that way. But if they’re trying to drag you into work instead of juggling the rest of the staff to cover, then by all means, consider new employers. Let them know what they’re doing isn’t right, either. Shouldn’t have to defend yourself when you’re sick as a dog.

I’ve found it actually less stressful to call out (I don’t do it often) since covid came around. Like people took the stick out of their behinds. Nobody bothers me, period. But of course, everyone’s situation is different. Higher stress/volume environments and what not.

You had no cap on sick days?! Like- what you can be paid for?

My contract grants a cap of 15k. When I retire… Anything beyond that is gone for good. I wish I could do that yearly. It’s a huge disadvantage with this cap crap.

For the record, I agree with you. But my point is that most corporations find you disposable. Such is the way of capitalism. Anyone who truly thinks that they aren’t because they exist within a highly technical field of work is fooling themselves.

If their profit margins aren’t affected by it, they do not care. So the rhetoric that your company sees you as irreplaceable is wrong. At the end of the day, you are nothing more than a statistic to them; a means to meet an end goal.

And if your position within a company is so critical that taking a day off causes major issues that forces several other people to work, then your job isn’t actually important. Your company’s workflow is just terrible and bottlenecked by your position with terrible contingency plans in place in the event you do call off.

i agree? I think?

Didn’t realize how many WoW players were corporate bootlickers. Time for me to bail out of this thread.

Yes. Because I’m the only one in the building overnight. So it goes without saying.

We only get 5 sick days per year but I rarely use them all. I’m relatively healthy so I might use 1 or 2 a year.

Sometimes. I’ve been out a LOT lately which I feel bad about, but I had covid and THEN I’ve had to leave to go to urgent care and then even ER for reasons that were NOT related to covid.

Mostly an issue in the states. Europe has much stronger worker rights. It’s wild that we value profits before people here. Euro’s mostly think we’re insane over here. They aren’t far off.

Encourage others to vote.

On a micro level, I can understand it. Rank and file workers (even managers) are left picking up the slack and specifically in the case of management, they can’t prepare or find coverage if they don’t know.

That said, it isn’t like you can often catch an illness coming on and in most jobs, it’s FAR more detrimental to have someone sick actively working (I would say all jobs but I’m sure someone can come up with some off the wall counter example)…not to mention the likelihood of spreading the funk around to everyone else.

On the macro end of things, it isn’t your problem to keep the company running and the onus is on them to have enough bodies or systems in place to provide coverage for potential unforeseen circumstances. Also, most companies aren’t going to care as much too about business decisions that negatively impact your financial stability over their own corporate profits or health of the business. They’ll sack your job and leave you to figure out how to make ends meat if it suits them. Don’t let yourself put too much blame or concern on yourself for needing to take care of yourself or make decisions that are right for you even if that means taking a new job and giving minimal notice or anything else that ends up bettering your life/circumstances.

OP Update:

My doctors note says I can’t go back until Monday. My employer called me to come in and massage four clients tomorrow (Saturday). I feel better except for the burning cough that’s producing little green alien phlegm.

Two of the clients are immunocompromised. She says I can just wear a mask. I lol’ed and said I’m thinking of our guests and I’ll be staying home until Monday. She said it’s fine but damn if it wasn’t the most passive aggressive “fine” I ever heard in my life, lmao.

As much as I need the money, going into work is the IMMORAL thing to do. I won’t be consciously responsible for killing anyone, thank you very effing much.

For the record: I’m an independent contractor, no benefits from the employer like sick days. If I call out, I don’t get paid. And I’ve only called in sick one other time back in April of this year. I massage 10-20 clients per week making about $50 per client before tips. For me it’s great pay, because I really don’t want to market my own business or do housecalls (SO SKETCHY for massage, UGH the stories I could tell you). And I don’t have the means to open up my own practice. And the workplace is around the corner from me.

Other than this specific issue, it’s a fantastic place to work and I’ve no intention of leaving. Instead, I’m going to just stick to my guns and make decisions that are best for me and the guests. And if the company doesn’t like it, they can fire me. I cannot collect unemployment but I can find a new place to work immediately with my skill set and experience.

Appreciate all the responses. Be good and be kind. :blue_heart:

You said pound sand. I assumed veteran immediately because I don’t know a single civilian who uses that term. I assumed Marine incorrectly.
I was basically saying “Word.”

Hi there, hope you’re feeling better! I can’t advise about your work issues, but I can about the cold/flu! Oil of oregano is a potent anti viral, antibacterial, anti fungal natural treatment that really works. You can buy as made up capsules, or buy your own empty capsules and put about 5-8 drops, then fill cap with olive oil. Take 1-2 x a day. Comes in 25ml vials with a dropper. This stuff is potent and caustic, be careful and take as I directed. Some people put drops in water and drink but I don’t care for the taste. I haven’t had full blown cold for years because I take this at the first sign, kills it in a day or two. I’m not a doctor just a nurse for 20 years.

Over time, you will find that their total carelessness of you and your health will get you to stop caring.

It’s how it happened for me. Once you realize that you are only a unit to them–just a cog in the machine–taking sick time, which aught to be built into your job, is the most normal thing you can do.

What’s the solution to Capitalism? Marxism? Where if you don’t show up for work, they put a bullet in your head?

No, thanks.
