Actually yes, I like RNG gearing.
That mixed with a few guarantees like rep gear feels just about right. Profession gear, too.
RNG enables peaks and valleys. It enables dry runs just as much as it enables runs where you get multiple pieces.
And that's perfectly fine because RNG becomes a non-issue when you have enough chances to get gear and we have TONS of chances to get gear. It tends to normalize towards the average drop rate.
I find that that having a beeline on BiS gear or believing anything outside of your top two secondaries is worthless is a great way to set yourself up for disappointment with a heavy RNG system.
Meanwhile, gear rains from the sky to such a degree that blizz decided they needed to give us something else to do with it.
