I mean, as a 224 Ret Paladin… Yeah.
If you asked me this at the start of Shadowlands, when I freshly hit level cap still using BFA gear, I’d say the content is challenging enough and pre-nerf Torghast was a super slog.

unpopular opinion:
wows open world content has never during any time period of the game been hard. not in classic, TBC, wrath, and so on.
well when everyday the dailies are like HERO KILL TEN BEARS OR I NEED 100 DEER HEARTS or some thing like that - and i need to do it 50 times to get the fluffy pet i want
yah i would like to steamroll it
The game is designed entirely around the endgame. It’s not abut the journey anymore, it’s about the destination. Seeing as that’s the case, everyone will want to get through that part as quickly as possible.
I am not bored out of my mind when doing open world content. I prefer for open world content to be a reasonably laid-back experience once one gets decently geared. If people crave challenging content, there is plenty of that in the game already. Don’t try to force that preference of gameplay style on the entire game world.
Also, for those who want a challenging open world where you have to group up with others to get anything accomplished in a timely fashion, there is always Classic.
I’d be fine with them making world content more challenging if they made the combat better. As it stands I wouldn’t want more challenging world content as I think the combat is terrible.
Somewhat related to your post…you are one of those “journey” people Ion was talking about! Sorry, but I honestly thought your kind didn’t exist!
Carry on now! ![]()
Yes, it is very much a thing for those of us who aren’t particularly interested in PVE group content or PVP and who play the game just to chill out.
Where no armor then. Lots of ways to make things challenging. The Maw can be challenging and not just the Jailer mechanics. Yet with all the complaints and now they are dumbing it down in 9.1.
What? Playing a powerful character is fun. Why should I take off my armor to make the game harder instead of there being actual difficult world content?
As a player it is not my job to make challenging content, it is the developer of the game’s job.
Remember the Suramar Nobles District? Blizzard remembers. There were a lot of complaints about that too, probably almost as many as there are about the Maw. (Although that didn’t stop them from later making the Maw…)
There were a couple parts of Nazjatar with frequent elites. Most players avoided them most of the time, AFAIK.
And there are similar areas in SL, too, even in the regular zones, and there are regularly WQs there. I suppose if you’re geared enough you can 1v2 the elites there and get away with it, but a fresh 60 is going to have to pay attention and pass a lot of skill checks to even handle one elite at a time.
There’s a quest for one of the campaigns (I think it’s Venthyr) where you have to meet some NPCs at the edge of the Citadel of Loyalty in Bastion – but they don’t tell you that there’s a safe way to get to that point. The most direct route – but not the best one – takes you through the Citadel of Loyalty. Challenge will be found unless you’re really geared, or maybe if the WQ is up and everything is in combat with someone else.
It’s a trickle down effect due really partly to player feed back.
Developer does hard content, someone complains.
Developer does it’s quest design etc, someone complains they dislike leveling, story, questing.
Developer weighs that feed back even if others like it and aim to do that ‘middle ground’ and or nerfing it so it’s made irrelevant.
Rinse and repeat each expansion.
Me too. It’s why I level more in Retail than Classic.
It’s also why I almost am always in tank spec yet in the rare times I run a dungeon, I never run as a tank.
You are playing as a mage. Try it on one of the lower tier classes for more challenge.
Open world always got easier the more geared you got. It even lasts longer now with scaling, which has turned out wonky with the squish and sometimes during leveling.
It’s a RPG. You are supposed to find things easier the more you work on your character.
Welcome to the entire genre post-UO/EQ/FFXI. I liked it when MMO worlds were exciting to explore and full of danger. Good leveling groups in FFXI were some of the most fun I’ve ever had.
But that’s my opinion, and most people who play this game do not want much challenge, they don’t want to group up for anything, it’s never gonna fly with this crowd. That is OK, but I wish I had a quality game I could go back to for that old feeling.
Shadowlands open world isn’t challengin. WoW’s open world has never been challenging. Not in real classic, not in fake bootleg Classic®, never.
WoW’s claim to fame that put it on the map is that it’s easy and soloable to cap. That means nothing now, but it was a total status quo shift back then.
I agree open world could use a bump in difficulty. Just a simple quest “ interupt his spell” would teach people alot.
That’s right. And it’s never been meant to be. It’s meant to be a more chill experience and that’s what made it popular.
But you can make things more challenging. Get on a lower geared Warrior and go to an elite area, lol.
There are several elites, rares and world bosses that need interrupted. Or they fear, knockback or do a lot of damage.
Open world questing content is intended for the weakest and slowest of players.
If you want it to be a challenge you have to do it yourself by making larger pulls.
That’s the issue, 40 people tackling a boss makes it super easy. They need to make some single player stuff that will train some people
