considering that hunters in classic were all about dual wielding or a big 2hander… yes.
Thrown spears. A spear (or javelin, as it is more appropriately here) is very different from a polearm.
Polearms were designed as weapons against cavalry, and for certain specific tactics like phalanx. The only long weapon used for hunter is thrown spears, and we don’t throw ours.
You should do some research… Boar hunting with spears are rarely thrown as they are not designed for that.
" pointing it at them when they charge, with the butt of the spear embedded in the ground, the Boar impales itself on the spear. Thus the long spearheads with set-back crossguards."

Ok, so that’s one example. However, again, spears and polearms are rather different. Most of the polearms in this game are more akin to poleaxes, halberds, bardiches, scythes, or even tridents. There are a few true spears, but mostly just at very low levels. And outside of boars, and possibly a few other types of animals, hunters almost exclusively used (and still use) ranged weapons, and carry knives or daggers. Long weapons especially are entirely impractical in forests and jungles.
Edit: for example: https://www.wowhead.com/polearms#itemsgallery
How many of those look like boar spears? Scrolling through the first pace, there’s one (Barbless Trident), and perhaps 1-2 more that could perhaps be considered stylized versions of a similare concept. Nearly all of them are bladed poleaxes, warscythes, glaives, or similar. None of those are practical or reasonable for hunting.
guns and bows are also different, but they are in the same category in wow… (by same category I mean, they act exactly the same)
Well we don’t live in a world where simple non magical humans can become so strong they can one punch a proto-dragon cough warriors who are supposed to not be magical cough
Well that’s a strawman if I ever saw one.
Guns and bow have very similar use cases.
Spears and poleaxes do NOT. While you may use a spear against boars, you’d never use a poleaxe or scythe against one (unless, you know, it was an emergency or something).
Please stop being obtuse here.
Not using long weapons while hunting is only somewhat based on strength. Sure, those weapons are heavier, but the key is, they are also much bigger. They are much less agile weapons, and they are way more difficult weapons to use, or by in large even carry, in less open terrain like forests and jungles.
That’s why poleaxes aren’t used to hunt boars, or birds, or elk, or anything else. They are too difficult to use in forests, and don’t provide enough benefit for that. Spears are used against boars, despite their length, because it counters the charging behavior of boars, but the same is not true of a slashing reach weapon rather than a stabbing one, and it’s certainly not true of quarterstaves (remember, SV can use staves too), or for other types of animals (especially skittish ones, where ranged weapons are largely the only option).
Please, find me an example of something akin to any of these being used to “hunt”, because these are far more representative of the “polearm” class in WoW.
You talk how these weapons are impractical while in your own class lore your own main weapons are called that and that they were used just because…
So you’re just side-stepping into irrelevancy now? People use fireballs, so who cares about the practicality of using a poleaxe to hunt an elk? Super strong argument, there.
I mean, the person I was originally responding to was arguing for reach weapons based on using traps and camo. So if you just want to throw away realism, maybe take it up with them instead.
Also, I want to be able to dual-wield bows. Because hey, we’re in a fantasy setting where gnomes can punch dragons, right?
I want dual wielding because I enjoy choice. If I wanted to be pigeonholed to one weapon type I would play FFXIV. I mean I do play FFXIV but I like the every class on 1 toon aspect
This is probably why I do not play WoW a lot any more. It’s just not fun. Hell I can load up EQ 1 and still have more personal choice on character design than I can in current WoW. I can also equip a Bow and 2 Melee weapons on a game that came out in 1999! What the hell Blizzard developers? Do you not know how to design? Maybe we should ask you to make WoW a mobile game. That way you can outsource and really slack off!
Just dunno why they never listen to what players want.
Oh wait I know, because once upon a time everyone wanted Pandas to play, finally got em and the player base said they were stupid and hurt blizzards feelings. Now we don’t get nice things.
REDMAGEFORLIFE!
Not really only because it is a pain to hunt for 2 weapons. That being said if blizz did allow SV hunters to DW or use 2h, I would be fine with that as well, just please be able to balance 2h and dw survival .
When they announced melee hunters, I thought it was going to be dualwield beastmasters. I was really disappointed in their choice of survival, of all things, and two handed weapons.
Rexxar is awesome.
Hell yes! BLIZZARD, LISTEN TO THIS MAN! Survival Hunter was at it’s best when it used dual wielding and damage over time ranged attacks. It was a fast paced melee ranged hybrid that emphasized the best traps in the game. It was thrilling and an mobile.
With dual wielding Mongoose Bite could be replaced with a Laceration attack that does less burst but applies a stacking bleed effect. The more you hit the target, the stronger the bleed and your attack speed goes up by 10-20% stacking 5 times. If you like burst damage, then stick to two handers, but if you like fast damage over time damage then go with dual wielding and stack your melee and ranged dots.
I’d like MSV to have dual wield as an option, either as a transmog or using the actual weapons. That would make weapon drops super annoying though.
You’re vastly overstating the involvement of melee in Survival’s gameplay in that BC/Wrath era.
They could make Hunter Kits drop instead of individual weapons. The kits would provide weapons based on your loot specialization. Once you equip the kit, you can set your combat to dual wield or two hander, changing your weapons and modifying your mongoose attacks based on that. Two-handers do the default burst attack, while dual wield does a stacking bleed attack that speeds up your melee attack speed. Stacks 5 times.
