DK Visuals & Animations Megapost

Ive been thinking about Chill Streak a lot as well since playing with it. Ive added that to the list.

Frost DKs should be able to summon wraiths or incorporate elements of that type of undead in general, imo.

Bumping this post again to say it would be a DREAM to have half of these changes. During Season 3 I’ve been maining a Kul Tiran DK and absolutely love it but yeah… many of the visuals still have that touch that they’re from 2008.

Blizzard really neglects visual and sound design for classes, it’s such a shame.

Honestly would like our voices back already. Tired of them dragging their feet on such a simple bug fix. The extra animations would be sweet too though.

Weve seen with the new covenant abilities update that it’s

  1. Literally Possible
  2. Easy as hell to implement

For a class that is the posterchild of WoW, an expansion that literally defined this game still to this day, it sucks that its literally left to rot

Totally support more rune blade casts. Feels so out of place to use hands as a DK.

DKs are defined by the tragedy of having your soul eaten away by a cursed blade. It’s all about that rune blade. But in WoW… they went with this weird idea that weapons aren’t important. Gearing and changing weapons is just a game mechanic, it shouldn’t matter for class identity.

A safe bet for spell animations is to always look at the Lich King. Obliterate, for example, feels similar to when Arthas struck the Frozen Throne to take the Helm. The Remorseless Winter suggestion is the same as the LK uses.

DK animations got to feel heavy. That rune blade is cursed, full of power and suffering. We should feel the weight of death with each strike.

I’ve been watching the thread for a while. Just want to support it so if the developers see, they can know that there are more people who do want stuff like this.

Practically all of these look like solid upgrades to the death knight theme, but the biggest winners for me would be Remorseless Winter using PalSpellCast1HUp, Blood Drinker and Runeforging using a channeled version of DKCast1HFront, Glacial Advance’s ice spikes getting updated, and then any of the weapon casts or left handed casts while still holding the weapon in the right hand (which might create a slight issue for dual wield).

For things I might be able to contribute, Frost Strike could also use a suggestion for the two handed version. My pick would be CombatAbility2H01 (fun fact: Vulpera already use this animation for two handed Frost Strike, as well as using CombatAbility1H02 for one handed). This is potentially a polarizing opinion depending on character race since some Special1H/2H animations are “better” than others. However, I come from a blood elf’s perspective and would prefer an animation that does not show my back to what I’m fighting. Obliterate makes this offense too, but I would pick Frost Strike to change if given the option.

I wonder if it would be a huge hassle to code glyphs to call on a specific animation for the ability it’s applied to, rather than just adding a visual effect to the existing animation or calling a different model to be used? Like if they simply had a vendor or inscription patterns for a set of glyphs that matched all the weapon swing animations you can find in the Wowhead dressing room, and allowed them to be applied to any ability that used a weapon swing. We’ve all heard the jokes about how the WoW programmers are dealing with a lot of spaghetti as is, but, if it’s possible, it might be a good middle ground between the players who want to keep their current animations and those who want different ones.

These are amazing!!

  • I would also like to have a new dedicated animation for Death Grip - maybe one that uses your non-dominant hand to pull them in instead of doing the normal cast animation.

  • Frost strike too should have its own animation. (Blood elves beyblade spin with their 2h special animation).

  • I would also like variation in heart strike too. We get that one slicing arc when standing in DnD, but it only goes in one direction so it feels weird spamming it sometimes - similar to Obliterate.

  • I also miss the old Death and Decay animation, it looked like it had a little more oomph

  • Also while not a visual, but death knights really need the voice effect back or at least new voices entirely like Demon Hunters. We also need running animations while holding weapons like demon hunters as well. (All classes should do this)

  • Blood needs more pronounced visuals.

Hmm…

Maybe trainers could be used as “mogs for animations”? Even if it’s just a few specific things, not all of them.

I kinda wanted the same for Demon Hunters. Doesn’t feel right to sheath your warglaives just to cast a spell. These aren’t the kind of weapons a DH would put away just to cast something.

And the “DH running animation” that was changed, for some strange reason. Basically, instead of being the baseline animation for DHs on the run, now it requires the DH to be attacking something, else ‘normal running with weapon-in-hand’ takes place.

Frost Strike for Kultiran uses the CombatAbility2HBig01 when using a 2h weapon, so I may have inadvertently left that out. All the same, its another spammable ability that suffers from animation fatigue, especially when certain racial attack animations are tied to it. Worgen do their little flip for frost strike, an animation that drove me to race change back in MOP.

As for the ability to customize weapon strike animations, I would absolutely love that, but I dont see Blizzard ever doing that, even if they had the capacity to do so. Theres a lot of animations that I feel would fit better for certain attacks, and the ability to customize that would be cool.

Something else that I think Blizzard should look into is adding in ‘mirrored’ weapon strike animations for certain attack animations, notably the cleaves. The mirrored animation would have to be adjusted to return to the standard ready pose though, so its not quite an easy implementation.

KT Males seem to be missing the CombatAbility2H02 animation, so I used an orc for the example.

Another thing Ill eventually add on are the weapon arc effects for our bigger attacks, my recommendation of Unholy Assault being the prime example. Condemn is a good example of what Blizzard can do for big meaty strikes, and Id like to see them apply this to our more powerful weapon attacks.

Thats unfortunate to hear. Since seeing the DH weapon run animations, I was really hoping that Blizzard would look into giving the other weapon types their own run animations, especially since longer weapons like polearms just dont look good in the standard running animations. Alas…

I was just thinking the other day how bad all the DK animations are. Some dont even do anything at all. Chill streak throws the smallest snowball, its so troll. DK’s not only have been gutted, many talents that were all baseline now cant all be taken, but the entire class needs a rework across all specs, utility added, movement added and all new animations that actually do something.

WoW’s first “hero” class doesn’t feel hero at all.

Who knew such small changes would nake such a large impact! I hope DK gets a rework + visual update soon these are great and lore friendly!

Well explained and the visuals get your point across. I’m 100% on board with this.

The more customization options, whether passive or tied to a specific skill, only enhance the game and connection to your character.

My main is a troll DK and I have a mog themed after the loa, Gral. Imagine Frostwyrms Fury being a shark instead of a wyrm or if Sindragosas Breath was a giant set of shark jaws. My head canon says his death knight abilities start to take on a more ocean theme as his connection to Gral grows.
