That isn’t a thing, at least for me. There is no reticle pop up. Literally just acts like another gray, non-interactable item in my bag.

Closing and restarting the game will fix the issue with not being able to open boxes.
I hit a slightly different problem though, which hopefully didn’t break anything:
Got the whelp egg, used the foil in the Valdrakken inn to upgrade it, then I went out and found two more foils. When I returned to the machine to upgrade it to level 3, it didn’t do anything the first time I tried (checking the replay, the quest it offered might have been the one to upgrade it to 2 again?), then upgraded it the second time, so I effectively spent 3 foils to upgrade the egg 2 times.
Since it appears you can only loot each bag once per account, it looks like I won’t be able to fully upgrade all the figures unless there’s more foils than necessary.

logged out, quit game, waited 5 min then restarted.
now working as intended.
according to article there are 14 foils, and 7 coins.

Well my first full game restart didn’t fix it, but my third did! I hope they fix the foil issue for you, sheesh.

the foils can bug out be used more than 2 times on some toys leaving you short and not able to upgrade everything, needs a fix asap as it leaves some ppl unable to finish the achievements

Foil issue here as well, I’m left 4 foils short at the moment after having used all 14 of mine but quest resets making it impossible for me in at least 1 case from getting it from the very start (just leaving Valdrakken was enough).
Hope Blizzard sees the high amount of foil issue reports here asap
This is my question. I hope it isn’t just a whole day like pirates day is. We need to change that to pirate week or pirate weekend. At least let it last a few days.

Is this supposed to be repeatable on alts? I was able to do the intro quest on one alliance and one horde toon, and while the mail item pops up on my other characters, the coin is nowhere to be found at the inn/harbor. If it’s not supposed to be repeatable fine but it’ll be annoying to have to abandon the quest on everyone I already accepted it on.
For those who were the first ones to take part in the event at its start, logging out and back in should resolve the issue.
To open the prize box, you’ll need to right-click and then target the ground to select a target destination for your item. It’s likely that if there are a lot of other players around, you’ll have a difficult time seeing your item, but it should be there.
While we want you to get foils, we don’t want your fun foiled. We’ll keep an eye out for any other issues in the meantime. These machines won’t be going away, so enjoy!

Right click on box and you will see a green circle appear. Put the circle on ground and click again and it wil open and you will get a copy on the ground and a copy in your bag for your toy box. The toy box one is the one you keep .

Had to relog 4 times for this to work.
How is everyone getting this quest …I logged in and no quest or mail item…should I try logging out and back in again?
