Did they fail to set up interest in Bolvar?

I feel like Bolvar was on the receiving end of a homerun swing from the “good guy” bat. It knocked the Helm of domination off his head, and bashed his good guy face in.

Now instead of being anti-hero Scourge badasses, the Ebon Blade is a bunch of “heroes!!!”. Legion had it right! Shadowlands is wrong.

Given that the sub losses are linked to blizzard making stupid decisions, nu-Blizzard is doing an absolutely awful job at listening, but not just that they are doing an even worse job at interpretting basic requests like “Add valor vendors” or something like that.

They apparently decided that this expansion did not need a Khadgar. This may possibly be a response to Horde players who made it plainly clear that they are tired of taking all of their queues from Alliance figures.

I’ve been doing the Deathlord quests recently and it made me super disappointed in current-Bolvar. They totally wasted what they were setting up in those expansions.

Bolvar sure, but Darion still has some solid anti-hero qualities. During the Maw intro he and Jaina discuss trying to get information from the nearby shades. Jaina thinks they wouldn’t willingly help us, and Darion’s response is to basically say, “Good thing then that I’m a death knight then, with all my manipulate-the-dead powers. Hey champion, mind if I borrow the Evil Hat of Doom chunk to go torture an amalgamation of countless souls for some information? I’ll give it back as soon as I’m done, thanks.”

He’s not interesting right now, at least not outside of the Torghast quests. Hell even something as important as Torghast was supposed to be isn’t even interesting. Maybe his importance will come later on in the next patch, when ever that drops.

It really would have been far more impactful if Sylvanas had simply killed him. It Certainly made no sense for her to leave him alive.

As other have pointed out We had the 4 horsemen and Darion to fill out the same role. I was really disappointed when the other 3 didn’t come with us to shadowlands.

It feels like he was simply kept alive because Im guessing a writer wants to do the whole “Taelia reunites with her daddy and saves him from damnation” storyline. It has become an overused trope of warcraft writing recently of women saving men either from big bads or themselves.

The mountains of salt wouldve been legendary, part of the fanbase was pretty salty how he got handled like a chump, me included. I reckon if they were going to kill him it shouldve been in game and not in a 4k cinematic, it was never going to be able to be a worthy battle for bolvar anyway so better make him a prepatch event and do the trailer of something else like… the actual shadowlands.

Sadly this is more to do with the handling of Sylvanas than Bolvar because they never clearly defined her powerup. If they had some unknown entity come from the shadowlands and face off against him it would have been a more acceptable defeat.

Debatable. The Lich King is arguably the most popular villain in World of Warcraft, and so there were plenty of people that were hyped to see Bolvar get up and kick !@#. I don’t think it would have helped much if they had someone or something other than Sylvanas come and body him.

I think people would have been more accepting of the cinematic if they showed Bolvar put up a more worthy fight, instead of not being able to get in a single hit.

oh very true, the fact that it was almost a flawless victory was the annoying thing.

Or at the very least if it wasn’t just Sylvanas alone. It would have been more believable if she had some other people with her. Would have helped make him look like less of a chump. That really was ridiculous tbh.

And the fact she apparently wiped out that big army of undead he had atop the frozen throne??? :unamused: :unamused:

She should have at least summoned some Mawsworn. Makes Bolvar look less chumped and introduces us better to Shadowlands’ primary antagonist.
