Did the night elves have it coming to them?

Even in infinite time it is still possible that the number never comes up. That’s why it’s called “probability” instead of “certainty”. It’s not a matter of the number being avoided, it’s a lack of guarantee that it would come up even given infinite chances to do so.

Given that the universe is believed to have a finite lifetime you can have events with a probability so low that they won’t occur within its lifetime.

And a being that lives thousands of years is good enough to be considered immortal when compared with our MayFly existences.

I’m not talking about “good enough”, I am talking about applying the question to literal eternity.

Mathematically, this isn’t complicated. Let’s say you have a base probability of surviving the year of 99.5%. Now we need to work out your odds of living for consecutive years in a row. To get two years, you multiply .995 by .995, arriving at .99. Three years? .995 * .995 * .995 = .985.

What is your probability of surviving 100 years? 99.5%^100 = 60.58%.
What is your probability of surviving 1000 years? 99.99%^1000 = 0.67%

This figure doesn’t get better as you approach infinity. Eventually your number just comes up.

I understand that save that “literal eternity” is literally a meaningless concept mainly because eternity itself is a nonstarter. The nature of the WOW universe especially is that the only you can count on is that everything dies… even immortals.

“Good enough” has to do because that’s all you can hope for.

This thread’s OP reeks of Karen

So far there is not a single mention of a mortal soul being reborn. Which makes us an odd tool for something / someone.

All forces claim some mortals. The Burning Legion, some who give in void powers, we saw some taken by the Light. I do not see any special importance in Ardenweald. If anything, we see now that kyrians were perfectly fine to drop all the souls into the Maw. Which makes the possible premise IMO void (pun intended).

When it comes to necromancy, there are 2 odd parts in the WQ you mentioned.

  1. When it comes to the Lick King related stuff:

Fallen Knight says: The Lich King calls to me. I must serve him once more!
Watcher Jacintha says: Though she bears the magic of the Shadowlands, its pull originates from the world of the living. She had to return.

or

Valiant Sentry says: I hear the dreaded call of the val’kyr. Please! Let me rest in peace! I beg of you!
Watcher Jacintha says: Though the val’kyr are not our true kin, their call back to the mortal plane must be honored.

  1. Although when necromancy is not related to the LK:

Mantid Warrior says: I am a commander of a battalion. A necromancer has wreaked havoc in my home, raising my soldiers to fight each other. I must have my revenge, but I fell in battle due to my foolishness.
Watcher Jacintha says: This warrior was allowed to return to life, and he ended up defeating and killing the necromancer. If we had taken this warrior to Oribos, the necromancer would have continued disrupting the balance of life and death in that world.

So, to kyrians it’s a problem and not a problem at the same time.
