You just literally quoted him saying “different eye colour, different relationship with magic and the sun well”
The difference exists, what he is saying is that he doesn’t consider the difference big enough for them to be playable. “That’s as close as you’ll get”
But understanding there is a difference, which even Ion does, is what we call nuance, and what the conversation was actually about until you started with the “Hurr Durr High Elves are Blood Elves are Void Elves” nonsense.
Again, we were talking about the mechanics of Void Elven sustainability when you had to come in with this tired point that matters not to the conversation being had.

Next expansion, void everything allied races.
Maybe one day, they’ll actually release a race there’s only “1” of to players, and other members of the “same” race appear as something different to you, like the generic follower system.
Pretty sure Ion or someone was bent on declaring the high elves turned into blood elves and blood elves are high elves. Or that some other elves are the high elves and never will there be a separate high elf race since one of the not high elves are high elves. (It’s like how we have facts and alternate facts that aren’t facts here in real life. :)) Something like that anyway. Some other Night Elf/Troll heritage lore out there too so maybe Trolls are high elves too.
This is backwards if you know their history. The tradition of the group is not to be beholden to anyone and to place their freedom to study and practice magic above all. It is why the split off from the Night Elves, its why they were extremely reluctant to enter into any alliance with their human neighbors and why their support was always perfunctory unless they themselves were in peril. When members of the Alliance betrayed them and began judging them for their magical pursuits it was very true to their character to leave. If the Horde ever tried to tighten their grip and start controlling and regulating their society I’d suspect they would leave them as well.
That is a pretty self serving narrative that is kind of ignoring the story presented in the game. Certainly there is always room for debate, but nothing was being thrown out the window, as you put it.
