Destro Prediction

After seeing the Demo overhaul, here are my predictions for how they might change Destro.

-Cataclysm will get its own mini-tree of improvements, similar to Doom in the left-hand corner, or dead-set in the middle like where Summon Tyrant is now.
-Dimensional Rift will get its own mini-tree of improvements, either like Doom in the left-hand corner, or where Summon Vilefiend is.

Overall, my mind set is… using Demo’s layout as a rough estimate, is Cata in the middle, Infernal where it is on the left-hand side, Dimensional Rift on the right-hand side, and Ritual of Ruin will either go away or it will be moved more towards the middle of the tree. Could even be a “Cataclysm begins a Ritual of Ruin” type deal, though I hope not.

Yeah that sounds ok I guess. Rift should be a spell that all destros can pick up so you got something to cast on the run.

Also they should move decimating bolt to the top of the tree so once again all destro locks can pick it up and just put the Avatar back in it’s place.

Doesn’t Diabolist already enhance Cataclysm?

Eh.
We had a great DR in Season 3 and the Warlock community decided to discard it for crit stats. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any investments into DR.

I genuinely want as many actives as I can get. Cataclysm, CDF, Soul Fire, Shadowburn, Dimensional Rift, Decimating Bolt, I want it all. I’m expecting some of those to be pruned entirely, which will be a shame if true, but I’d love a build that weaves all of them into my rotation well.

They also really need to bake the Season 3 tier bonus into Dimensional Rift.

Agree, I for one loved the dimensional rift in Season 3. But I think it just wasn’t voted much because of the weird pathing it had, least that’s how it is to me

That got changed to buff Infernal instead

And they mentioned returning it as a means to give us ‘back’ Avatar of Destruction in the promised Destro rework. Hence my predictions here. Its prob. assured that we’ll get a Cata-focused section. My other prediction is a Dimensional Rift section, since… they gave Vilefiend a whole section for Demo, if anything on the Destro tree should get that treatment, it’d be Cata and Dimensional Rift.

I’m sure we’ll see new stuff, which is what I’m most excited for. But as for existing/returning spells…

Cataclysm as the starter talent instead of Conflagrate.

Rain of Fire and a revamped Hellfire as a choice node. Sanguine week or have a DH tank zipping around all over the place? Take Hellfire instead, let your aoe move with you. It would obviously need a bit of work to make it comparable to RoF (and so it doesn’t kill you). Nothing’s more annoying than dropping RoF and having everything dragged out of it (also see Consecrate and Death and Decay).

A “mobility” talent. I suggest Fel Flame brought back as a single target on-the-move filler. Not as good as Incinerate. Maybe paired with Channel Demonfire as a choice node, and let us cast CDF while moving as a more AOE focused filler.

Remove Soul Fire. Or Shadowburn? Idk, but neither one has ever been particularly fun to play outside rare edge cases. Scrap one or both, or redesign them (again).

Dimensional Rift decoupled from CI, and moved to an earlier position. Flame Rift added as a follow-up extension talent or baked in.

I’ll just play what the top dogs are playing

Love the ideas! I posted a ‘War Within Wishlist’ post earlier, you can prob. still find it, but I will disagree on 2 points.

  1. Shadowburn. Shadowburn is not only classic, our only execute, and mandatory in PvP. Without it, Destro as a spec sorta dies off.
  2. Soul Fire. While not seen in PvP, and limited use in PvE as you said, its the original Destro burst ability all the way from Classic. I’d personally like to see it in a split talent with Decimating Bolt, and have both of them replace Chaos Bolt. Soul Fire a 1-Shard, longer cast time ‘bolt’, and Decimating Bolt functioning more like Hand of Gul’dan, where it spends 1-3 Shards to fire that many bolts (then you can remove its Incinerate buff-aspect, and make it work with Burn to Ashes).

As for Hellfire vs Rain of Fire, I admittedly went a different route in my wish list, where I have Destro locks starting with Burning Rush. Hellfire becoming a passive that when you take damage from Burning Rush, you radiate damage to nearby enemies.

Then, finally, I 100% agree on DR being decoupled. My original draft had DR being moved to the middle of the talent tree, with several support nodes, but I recently came to enjoy the idea of it being the capstone for the Ritual of Ruin side. Where Chaos Bolt spending Ritual of Ruin also opens one of the 3 basic rifts, and Rain of Fire opening a Flame Rift.

In this version of DR, the 25% to nearby enemies is built into it, it doesn’t generate Fragments, and most notably, it continues to strike the target even if they die (which is one of the main issues with DR, that if the target dies, the rift is useless).
