Now before I get in to the Meat and Potatoes of this post, let me say that currently Mount Equipment unlocks at level 20 (same level where you unlock base ground mount skill) in current version (Battle for Azeroth 8.3.7). Which is gonna change, obviously, when the level squish goes live with the prepatch. But not in the way you’d think.
Here’s how mount skill unlock goes when Prepatch hits:
lvl 10: base (60% Mount speed) mount skill
lvl 20: fastest (100% Mount speed) ground mount skill
lvl 30: base flight mount skill
lvl 40: fastest flight mount skill
lvl 40: Mount Equipment unlocks
Nope, that is NOT a typo. Mount Equipment unlocks after you are able to buy the flight skill.
That means that if you are not:
- a new player leveling through BfA for the first time.
- someone who didn’t unlock BfA Pathfinder for whatever reason and decide to level an alt through BfA.
- leveling your main through Shadowlands.
That 3 out of the 4 current type of Mount Equipment will either be mostly or completely useless, because being able to fly mostly obsoletes the need to:
- Water Walk.
- Prevent being dazed.
And completely obsoletes the desire to:
- Run on the ground at an additional 20% increased speed.
However, you will still make use of the Slowfall mount equipment, I guess.
Is it really necessary for Blizzard to gimp a system they had just introduced in 8.2? Especially since the Water Strider did lose it’s ability to walk on water so that Mount Equipment could be a “meaningful choice” instead of people using Water Strider all the time in combination with one of the other Mount Equipments.

A thread that is on the PTR forum discussing this issue. I admit, I myself did get a little miffed in my own comments in this thread. But here I just want to see what feedback there is to be had on this topic. Especially since it seems Prepatch is just around the corner.
Do you agree with the decision to gate Mount Equipment til lvl 40? Do you disagree with the decision?
My position is obviously that this is a stupid idea, but that’s just me.
