[CS Lounge] Caffeine, Snacks, and a Warm Fire

And now I just got a text from the “USPS” . Apparently, due to incomplete information, they couldn’t deliver my package. Of course it’s a scam. But they also didn’t bother to hide the other eight phone numbers they sent the same exact message to.

What’s sad is some people must fall for it, or they wouldn’t keep doing it.

I keep getting one from a random number telling me that I have an unpaid toll and my account is at risk of being shut down. I don’t live in a state (nor have I ever lived in a state) that has toll roads… lol.

Think a lot of people are by now. Yet winter seems ever so persistent. We keep going from 80s to snow, then back up near 80s to gonna be in 20s over next few nights.

Mostly older folks and naïve youngsters, unfortunately.

A certain administration recently pulled funding that allowed an FBI program dedicated to teaching elderly people about these scams and how to spot/ignore/report them, too. It’s only going to get worse, no word yet if that program will be reinstated.

Pretty sure the groundhog saw his shadow this year. We got about 2-3 inches this morning. Nothing show stopping but it was pretty to look at :cloud_with_snow:

Of course they don’t bother to hide that. Because the target audience are those that are vulnerable and whom aren’t savvy enough to understand the red flags. It’s why I tell my grandpa not to tap or click links he gets. Let me see them first, since I also get them and can spot fake vs. real, especially since I can understand headers (for emails).

I got that one recently too. My state does have a toll road, but I haven’t driven on it in approximately ten years, so I didn’t even bother reading the whole thing. Plus it was in email. Back when I did use the toll road regularly and had an account, they probably had my phone number, but they wouldn’t have had my email. And even if the state was just going off license plates, I don’t think I’ve ever given them my email there either. Could they still figure out my email pretty easily? Sure, but they wouldn’t do that - they’d just send a letter.

I can’t figure out how to look at email headers on my phone, where I do most things these days. But TBH I haven’t tried that hard to find out how, because it’s so easy to spot the scams if you know what you’re looking for. (If I really needed the headers I’d use my laptop where I do know how to view them.)

I just log in and check the FasTrak account manually if I get any (I’ve only ever gotten two such scam emails). Since I’ve entered the license plates for my grandpa vehicles, if he has a FasTrak transponder that has gone dead, the cameras will just read the plates and bill the account electronically (that’s why I put in the license plate numbers just in case, especially with the Goldwing since he has no way to properly mount the transponder due to nobody making one anymore).

If it’s a gmail account you could always look at the web version on the phone and it’d show them there more easily. If it’s on an iPhone hopefully there’s a setting to show headers. Either way, it’s most definitely easier to do on a computer just because of screen size and visible real estate.

I worked for Blue Cross in 2021-2023 and I can confirm that the elderly are targets and I don’t know exactly what program you are referring to but it wasn’t working at that time….I had members giving out their Medicare numbers, all sorts of stuff over the phone…it’s scary

Suposed to hit +8 on saturday ill believe it when i see it.

RIP Mike lange those that know the pit penguin.

Bit of an Aussie thing here, but I am questioning the how…

A++ pranking there.

It’s very cold here, but didn’t feel as cold as I expected. I had to do laundry today, cold or not, and take out trash. I was able to get to the laundry room without putting my gloves on, though by the time I took trash out and loaded more stuff for donation into my car and so on, my face was starting to get cold. I think there’s way less wind than I was expecting.

Currently -4 (about -20C) and wind chill -18 but it’s 2 am and I’m happily inside.

It is about 21C (70F) at the moment. Going to get as low as 19C (66F) tonight with a little bit of rain here.

Not so often anymore, but I used to spend some time tracing those scams upstream.

I remember one time, a couple years back, I discovered that the individual who had registered the phish domain had done so under his own name.

I guess some of these phishermen are complete novices too, and that it’s become something of an industry.

I just got an email from the “USPS”  the other day. They misspelled ‘parcel’.

Can we trade? I’d take 19C. Heck, I’d even take 19F, which we aren’t going to see until Saturday.

Sad that after today, I only have 2 days of vacation left. I was hoping to get more decluttering and organizing done, but I’m making progress every day. Really thought the bedroom would only take a day or two, but I’m still at it. Getting close though. Going to parents today, going to go through my jewelry box with my mom, in case she knows some history I’ve forgotten for any of it. (99% of it is cheap costume jewelry anyway.) Clothes are mostly done, just need to organize closet and rehang some clothes on better hangers, then get rid of excess hangers (of which I have an absurd amount). Still needing decluttering and organizing: shoes, wrapping paper, towels and linens and whatever the heck is in my cedar chest (should be just towels and linens, but you never know) and yarn, sewing, and crafting stuff. That one is last because it probably needs to move somewhere other than the bedroom, and a lot of it currently isn’t there, but there won’t be room elsewhere until I declutter elsewhere. I actually think the front hall closet is next since it contains clothing and hangers too.
