Now it’s our turn for bad weather. Just got a storm watch for tomorrow and Saturday. 6 or more inches but very high winds. They’re expecting widespread power outages. Not a good thing when it’s going to get really cold.
Yep. Same here. A ton of snow and wind, then the temps drop. It’s going to be “fun.”
Spry as a spring chicken?
Or slow as a winter centaur!!
That beef roast turned out so yummy. It just fell apart with a fork, so tender.
I put it in the crock pot on low for about 12 hours. Only added onion, seasoning, and 8 cups of beef broth. Once we were ready to eat, I took majority of the broth and boiled red potatoes in it - then mashed them. Took the rest of the broth and made a gravy. Then cooked some green beans and rolls. We still have a lot of meat left over for tonight.
While we don’t get really really cold in the winter, I think I will still take the advice and stay inside and wait for Spring. Radiator will be my best friend.
It finally just got cold here. Radiator my friend, too, now. LOL
I live in a cinderblock and stucco house. It is very sturdy, retains heat or cold like a cave though. Not insulated in the side walls. I have a gas furnace but only 7 vents in the whole house. 1947 era so you get what you get. I love the house, the hardwood floors, and pretty much everything about it. Except that tiny bit about the cinderblock walls when it gets REALLY cold.
Hoodies and blankets are my friends. Also hot tea.
We get another heavy flash flood rain storm this weekend + high winds again, then a super cold snap with possible snow. We have not had real snow in years here. I went grocery shopping today and picked up everything I think I need to not leave the house for a LONG time.
I also am working on finally unpacking and cleaning up the basement after having moved here 15 years ago. Stopped at goodwill to see if they had any floor lamps. Left with platinum rimmed china dishes They are fancier than my plain white dishes but coordinate perfectly and replace broken ones. I mean… I needed them right? $1.25 seemed a fair price.
Edit - looked up the pattern. Gorham “Hallmark Platinum” pattern. Discontinued. Replacements run $25 a plate or so? Depends on what you can find. Well then, $1.25 was very fair indeed.
YAY for hibernation!
Don’t use them in the microwave!
Snow finally got here about an hour ago. Wind showed up sooner. Let’s see how long the power will stay on. Detroit Edison is not known for being reliable. Our neighborhood wires are all underground, but the ones to our area are not.
Oh I know! I have other china that was either thrifted or handed down from relatives. I had a housemate who made that mistake with one of my plates once! I was furious that an engineer did not think about the whole metal + microwave thing! Thankfully it was not one of my grandmother’s.
My everyday dishes are plain white with no decoration so these with the platinum trim coordinate beautifully and can be mixed in. I will just keep them away from guests who might try to heat something!
I have a set of cheap Corelle plates that I love. They go anywhere.
I think my mother sold ours at a yard sale or something. They were white with green flowers on the edges. I never got my hands on them.
Ah well. Yours are super practical, sturdy, and I always thought they had a lot of pretty patterns.
The worst thing about grocery day (aside from having to actually be out and be around people), is having to actually put all the stuff away.
And then look at your fully restocked cupboards, realize you’re starving - and want absolutely nothing you’ve got on hand.
I buy a new colour at IKEA every once in a while but we have a colour palate we generally stick with in the house (green, peach, yellows)
Well i learnt something Brad Dourif voices chucky plays grima wormtoungs and suder in star trek voyager.
And so much more.
It looks like the snow has stopped, finally. We got about a foot, half wet, heavy stuff, then the other half overnight is gorgeous powder. Makes me want to go skiing, or at least play in the snow. But the temp is dropping (down 10° since I got up at 6:00), and the wind is picking up. And work.
Someone doesnt look impressed.
How pretty! I have snow envy, but also am glad I don’t have to shovel it. One good thing about snow is it forms an insulating blanket keeping anything below it at freezing temp, instead of well below freezing. Good for plants an bulbs. Also can help insulate a house from super sub zero temps.
We got heavy rains, and around noon the winds pick up again. Someone in the county was badly injured by a tree that fell on their house last night. No flooding this time I don’t think.
Yesterday in prep for all this bad weather I decided to inspect the basement windows. Something I had never done on my 1947 house even though I bought it in 2009. Yikes. They are original single pane glass in a metal frame set in cinderblock. Much insulating around them was done. Cleaning. Also discovered that the glazing that holds the glass in was crumbled to dust in places and there was just air coming in the gaps. I don’t keep window glazing handy in my house! I grabbed some window caulk and fixed the gaps/secured the glass as best I could. It is weather tight anyway. Thankfully the temps last night were unseasonably warm with the storm so it kept it within the caulk curing temp range.
Down side - I now know I need to totally rebuild those original windows… I have no idea how to tackle rebuilding metal windows set in cinderblock and concrete. I guess that is a project for a day that is not today.
