Crashing, freezing, and stuttering after 8.3 [Intel GPUs]

The only compensation Blizzard will offer is a “Thank you for your patience.”

So my minor work around wasn’t permanent, did Ny’alotha and was freezing constantly to the point I would have to reboot every freeze. BUT I played in windowed mode and while I did have a frame rate drop big time, I only had 2 minor freezes which stopped and let me continue playing. Windowed mode helps

I upgraded my OS from High Sierra to Catalina 10.15.3 today. WoW worked perfectly on High Sierra.
So, this seems to imply an incompatibility with Catalina and WoW 8.3.X.
My game crashes immediately in dungeons (spinning wheel of death). It sometimes recovers; sometimes my whole system crashes and I need a hard power cycle. Completely unplayable. I can tell the graphics are bugging.
Turns out I can’t downgrade my OS w/o wiping my hard drive completely. So what now? Partition my hard drive and install Windows? We all know how that will go. Just another can of worms.
I’m so upset right now. I am trying to reinstall WoW (hail mary). I have turned on Windowed mode and lowered the graphics (particle mode on low).
I’ll upload my system logs next time it happens.

Hardware Overview:

Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 8 GB
Boot ROM Version: 204.0.0.0.0
SMC Version (system): 2.44f2
Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650

System Software Overview:

System Version: macOS 10.15.3 (19D76)
Kernel Version: Darwin 19.3.0

Just tried playing again, fine flying above Orgrimmar. Zoned into LFR, froze up permanently as soon as we pulled the first trash pack. Had to force quit.

I’m usually pretty relaxed about tech issues, but I resubbed because patch was coming out, and to not be able to play it with more than 2-3 mobs and no players on screen for this long now is pretty awful. Will probably just unsub if nothing changes in the next week or there’s no compensation.

If you can clone to an external drive, you may be able to boot from the external, wipe the internal drive, then install High Sierra onto the internal drive and then use Migration Assistant while booted from the newly installed 10.13.6 and bring over your user folder and system settings from the external (this will leave your external intact with no changes to it in case you want to go back to 10.15.3).

It’s an option, though a bit time consuming.

In regards to the blue post stating this is only effecting “Intel” graphics, I beg to differ. I’ve experienced exactly what all the other posters have experienced in this thread, but I’m on a iMac (Late 2015) with an AMD GPU. I’ve gone through all the troubleshooting on Blizz Mac Support page and the game still crashes on me.

I’ve experienced the exact same thing.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
3.3 GHz Intel Core i5
24 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB

I’ve done all the “Blizz” troubleshooting.
Reset the UI
Installed all available updates for macOS (Mojave 10.14.6)
Ran the repair tool
Repaired application support permissions
Repaired disk permissions
Ran the Apple Hardware Test (and others, Tech Tool Pro/ATOMIC). It ain’t my Mac.
Uninstalled/Re-installed WoW

Game was running flawlessly until the latest patch. (actually, the FPS went up a bit with 8.3 launch, which was pretty cool)

However, today, I’ve had the game crash on me three times and kernel panic my iMac twice. The last time it kernel panicked, I was just standing on the boat in Boralus harbor redoing my keybindings.

Crash codes:

Well, tried to play for the first time in a few days, guess what, not only did I get the colorful wheel of death, but a complete shutdown too! Awesome.

Blizzard, you wanted the details, here they are (now fix it!):

I was playing my Hunter Koiyu on Alleria doing Dailies on 1Feb2020 at 11:42pm PST.
Joined a group for Sandswept Bones in Voldun, but mere seconds after we attacked, my screen froze and the rainbow wheel popped up and kept on spinning. Since my husband was in the same group, I knew when the fighting had ended, and just had to wait to see if I would continue to spin, be frozen, or come out of it. Well, didn’t get lucky and my machine forced a shut down. Tried to take a screenshot, but didn’t get my fingers to do it fast enough. So, hopefully this information will help you in some way, shape, or form.

I re-opened my ticket for it tonight, and shared the same information I just shared with you. Now, fix it please.

I’ve been having issues of my NVIDIA display driver crashing and then restoring since 8.3 too (as well as on a second computer with a similar set up). It’s the absolute worst in the area specifically between the The Great Seal and the Port of Zandalar for me, and intermittently happens in other places as well–including during Mythic+ dungeons.

@Terrorgeist: Your kext list shows you using the Bitdefender anti-virus and Malwarebytes realtime protection. To ensure that these are not conflicting either with each other or with other software, please temporarily disable them and try playing WoW again. If the problem goes away, you need to whitelist World of Warcraft in both Bitdefender and Malwarebytes.

Also, if you are using Bitdefender’s VPN to play, you’ll need to troubleshoot this aspect by also temporarily not using it. Eliminate all three variables, then enable one at a time until you come across the problem again (if the problem is not present when all are disabled that is). Once you come across the problem, disable all except the last component prior to the crash during troubleshooting.

Your GPU is an AMD GPU, which is not affected by the Intel driver bug experienced in this crash. You have a conflict elsewhere in the system that needs to be rectified.

Ya know, it’s pretty ballsy to say that Blizzard needs to reach out to Intel or Apple to fix the problem when the problem only started since 8.3 launched, which means the problem lies with Blizzard’s own code for 8.3, none of the hardware or software from Apple and Intel would be to blame.

It’s pretty sad too cause you’d think a company that was built on a reputation of caring about their customers would actually, ya know, care about their customers and not have such crappy customer service…

Side Note: Blizzard, y’all really need better people handling the tickets, their responses aren’t at all reassuring, they really come across as “Why are you wasting my time with this?”

LOL this post takes the cake. Its like blizzard forgot they reset all the graphics after patch. This reminds me of a useless helpdesk employee asking if the computer is turned on.

I think we definitely aren’t getting a fix for a while or ever at this point since blizzard has the “more serious” issue of poking the Warcraft 3 hornets nest lmfao”

I can’t do dailies, visions, any BGs or anything higher level, so I decided to play a low level alt. Just froze in Deadmines. I mean come on, there’s no rhyme or reason for this.

The first boss has medium graphics (with the lightning) and I didn’t freeze but then the next room we managed to pull a ton of adds and monkeys and boom, froze. Fix this already!!

they must’ve changed the coding with the graphics or something, bc one minute im at 50 fps… then it goes to like 27, then something crazy happens (like a fight or you bursting aggressively lmao ) now your at 7 fps and your screen freezes and now u have to reboot…

Yeah I have the 5700 XT and the latest version of Catalina but bootcamp just does not work with it. Drivers refuse to install, Windows refuses to boot, etc. I’ve been on the egpuio site a lot but the solutions there with setting up hacked drivers and then using a special EFI boot device to trick the computer into thinking it’s loading MacOS while windows boots is more time commitment than I’ve had thus far. Maybe when I have a free weekend though I’ll have to sit down and just try and power through everything and to see if I can get it working.

Yeah this struck me as a weird story to tell too… If Catalina had updated and everything broke then for Blizzard to reach out to Apple and try to work together to fix the issue would have been logical. But instead everything broke when they pushed out their own 8.3 update which would suggest that it’s not so much an Apple issue as a Blizzard issue (unless a tool that they used to compile some library or something was updated and that’s causing the issues?)

IDK, either way… it sounds like it’s deflecting and the lack of communication makes me wonder if I’ll ever get to play the 8.3 raid (or shadowlands for that matter).

Do you guys still have a pre 8.3 client there that you can test on to see when the problems occurred? It sounds like you’re saying that you updated your own code and broke something but have no clue how to review your own work to see what happened and need Apple and Intel to come help out…

Is version control a thing over there? Can you put on your internal patches one month’s worth of work at a time to see when it broke and then gradually roll back to pinpoint the code that was committed that caused the issue and then compare with what it had been?

Is the only way to solve this to rely on reports from customers and then try blindly to guess at what might have happened, what might fix it, and then ask for help from other companies?

Seems like the logical solution, right?

They sorta tried it then realized it wasn’t working then updated the game again

I reduced all graphics to 1 and turned my 3D resolution to 60%; you can see the pixels forming the textures of objects. I open my quest log and freeze. I get solarbeamed I freeze. I get iris beamed… forget it the computer could cook and egg better then play wow
