Covenant Abilities cannot be locked

I’m using the word change as in to alter the class. Not change which class you pick. Changing talents changes how your class is played. It changes if you have capacitor toten or wind rush. Does my ghost wolf heal me or doesn’t it. You are changing aspects of your class.

They already said you can change covenants?

It just won’t be as easy as going to a rest area or popping a tome.

They also said it wouldn’t be easy. Ion actually specifically said it would be difficult.

Yes, although how “difficult” remains to be seen.

This is probably the first real choice/impact introduced in the game beyond picking your initial class/race so I think it’s kinda cool. If they drop it I guess that’s fine.

I just hate seeing a thematic RPG style choice neutered for an extremely small segment of players to get off on parsing. The kind who pick their race solely on abilities.

All I want is the abilities to not be locked. I agree that you must make a choice for what story, armor and covenant fits the character you want to play. But the gameplay aspect of it WILL ruin the practical aspect of the game.

I couldn’t really care less on this toon, to be honest. I only play prot warrior anymore and I only really tank keystones and very, very, very rarely alt raids.

On my mage, though, I like to play all three specs and I like to parse. I’ve got 99s on virtually every fight in heroic and I’m sitting at 97th percentile overall on mythic so far–no, I’m not bragging. I’m giving context for what will come below (i.e. why I don’t like it.)

This kind of system has the potential to actively hinder what I like to do in this game–which is find the optimal builds for specific situations and perform as well as I feasibly can. It is especially a problem because I like to switch specs a lot on my mage. I also do both raids and keystones and I was hoping Shadowlands would make pvp enjoyable again but if I have to be sub-par there…

If I build for raiding on, say, a fire mage, I could be sub-par in pvp or dungeons or possibly in all content as frost/arcane. I just reaaaaaaally dislike where they’re going with this system because personally, I don’t play WoW for a deep RPG experience and haven’t in over a decade. That is what singleplayer games like Balder’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity, the Witcher, et cetera are for.

In WoW I just want to do challenging content with friends and I want to build for the content I’m doing at the time. That is where the fun comes from and yes, I realize I’m probably in a minority of people it’ll bother but hopefully I’ve expressed why it is an issue to those that it is.

Pick what you want and adapt.

It isn’t a hard choice. It’s a game, not a life altering event.

You forget a third category of people who are sincerely sadistic and enjoy seeing chaos, distress, and suffering across the community.

They often speak the loudest on the forums, reddit, and on twitter and get their vision of the game implemented over everyone else who stays quiet.

Racials are no where near as impactful as these new abilities will be.

I cannot agree more. I’m not sure how people who LIKE to try a little hard are essentially bullied for wanting a change like this, but if you don’t do any of that content and you don’t care whats best, how the abilities being swappable effect those players.

The best part is when people who want to play the game - get bullied with systems like this - but CONTINUE TO PAY for the game…

Blizzard knows this or they are stupid. There is no in between here. They are doing this on purpose for christ knows what reason.

Why waste development time LITERALLY repeating BFA’s mistakes?

Its true. A very vocal minority that enjoys seeing people upset. They enjoy when anyone raiding or pvping above LFr arent having fun. Its their fault after all. They want to do better.

But they aren’t the minority when they account for the most tweets to the Blizzard Devs - that’s why these systems stay in place. In practice they are the vocal majority in the places that matter.

I stopped playing around the release of the essences because the acquisition of them just was not feasible with my work schedule. And come to find out no one wanted to do them a second time. It is also what stopped me from resubbing for 8.3 because I knew I would be barred from any group content because I had no essences.

I mean, you’re practically saying “I like to troll people because I’m miserable” without outright saying it. lol

Mmmmm, when it comes to Warriors your argument makes more sense, I’ll give you that. It makes less sense with a Frost or Blood DK, for example, or a Fire Mage and a Frost Mage, where each branch of knowledge takes a lifetime to master (according to lore). I concede that it is a swap that should be in the game, but I think it should still be costlier than just being in a rested area (I’d like to see it go back to an incremental gold cost). Talent swaps totally make sense to simply be done at a rested area (see my previous post).

Class, race, faction, and covenant choices should be much more important, though, and changes to these should be impossible or very very costly. I’m not a fan of paywalls but they make sense here…

Ok, I see your point now, but this is now a case of lore/flavor being removed from the game for the sake of balance (which I despise). Having covenants give you unique abilities just adds to their importance and value…

It’s the racial situation, but even more unbalanced. So yes it might not be as impactful as racials but racials are plently impactful when 50% of top pvpers play either orcs or humans. And that top m+ keys are made by full night elves groups. It’s just that racial are still kinda small input so only for the top of the top it will matters. Those abilities might matter for way more than just the top of the top if they are impacting, we will have to determine that when we will be able to test them further.

There’s specifics part of the game that people like that make it endurable for them. But for sure, the current trend is down. Lot of people are making that decision to not play the game. If it wasn’t for Classic, BFA numbers would be below wod.

Classic seems to have a lot more in common with this style of choice than the free spec/talent/gear swaps easy to change and do everything style we have now.
