I don’t really like country music because it all sounds the same to me, but my wife has it going all the time in her Jeep so I hear it more than I’d like.
What’s the old saying? If you play country music backwards the cooler fills up with beer, the wife comes back, the pickup truck runs, and the dog comes home.
I would like to point out that—though I didn’t start making my stuff until 2-2.5 years ago—I was ultimately inspired to start making my wow-based, forum-GIFs because of specifically Cranius’s Highwayman video plus Oxhorn’s videos (plus, a couple of other unique wow machinima I always loved).
I grew up in the rural midwest (though during and for a decade and a half or so after college lived in both towns of ~30-100k and in a suburb of Chicago; however, not quite 7 years ago, I moved a house a handful of miles from where I grew up: now, I’m not in any town, but the closest has sub-1000 people which is a fair bit smaller than Johnny Cougar’s Small Town he grew up in though that’s within 50 miles of me). It’s less focused now, but back in the 80s and 90s country and country-adjacent (bluegrass, rockabilly, southern rock, Americana, etc) music was pervasive there/here. Personally, I enjoy a lot of country music, but, like all genres that I listen too—which is an eclectic variety—I don’t like everything country.
I almost never listen to mainstream modern country because, for the last couple of years, I spend a lot less time in the car because I work from home (when my terrible Internet connections cooperate) and so almost never listen to the radio anymore. There are a few country artists that I do still buy their albums (Eric Church, Nick Shoulders, Willie, Roseanne Cash, Sierra Ferrell, a few others). I do have country songs that I absolutely love, others that I don’t like as much but listen to for nostalgic reasons, many that I think are meh, and plenty that I dislike or hate. But, just because I don’t like some doesn’t mean I dislike the genre. I don’t hate any genre of music that I’ve listened to: I give songs a fair shake on an individual basis because there’s plenty of music where I am mesmerized by one song just to despise the next song on the same album.
I understand that not everyone can share the same tastes, but it’s hard for me not give a song at least one listen because you never know when you’ll find a new favorite (though nothing has replaced my absolute favorite since the first time I remember hearing “Bad Moon Rising” at sub-4 years old, so what do I know ).
Country is not my favorite genre of music—that’d be electro swing, prog rock, or surf rock depending on which day it is—however, I do enjoy a fair number of, mostly older, country songs. I enjoy hearing—real not fake—accents and dialects that are at least similar to my own and the family and friends I grew up with, though very few are quite right: there’s not a ton of big names with a Hoosier apex accent (especially the even more of a blend with southern in-land dialect in the Indiana-Kentucky border region; and, especially few female artists) with Mellencamp, Wade Ray, and Hickory Wind being a few of the best singing examples and Larry Bird or “Donnie Baker” from Bob and Tom being close, non-singing speech examples.
Tyler Hood is probably the best example of a male voice representing those around here; he was a class mate and neighbor of my youngest first cousin (I think she’s 20 or 21 years younger than I am):
I like themes of rural living, hard work, bittersweet love and loss, nostalgia and reflection, etc., maybe even mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin’ drunk (I don’t drink anymore though IRL…not for a long time…). Sadly, there is a sizable subset of country songs that reflect a regressive standpoint on social issues, and those songs I don’t tolerate. I love living in a rural area because I love nature and having multiple acres of land to live on, peace and quiet, and the sloooow life versus the go-go-go of the urban hustle I struggled with…yet, my worldview is very much not in line with many of my neighbors, co-workers, and local friends (that’s okay though, most are still good people).
Anyway, a couple of my favorite country songs:
And, if you count NRPS as country:
Also, because I like some genre blends too, I’ll post one of my favorites:
Not realy modern pop country because…I don’t at all like the culture surrounding it (or the music), but BIG into Gothic Americana/Americana, indie folk western, modern outlaw, southern gothic, etc.
Those Poor B—st-rds (and all the related projects, like Sons of Perdition, Lonesome Wyatt, etc)
JB Nelson
Blackclaw
O’Death
The Butchers and the Builders
White Buffalo
Palodine
etc…there are tons out there but since they’re not mainstream and not popular with the usual country crowd, they’re a bit of a dig to find.
Anyone interested can check out my spotify playlist here (note: some of the more indie artists aren’t on spotify but you can find them on bandcamp) h ttp s://open.spotify.com/playlist/2TD2yAkjTk5HLzpQqQNd6I?si=a0392859def24cb1
I watched a video about a year ago on John Melloncamp. I think he still lives in Bloomington, Indiana.
He really enjoys painting and other forms of art, and he said that he only made music to fund his art, or something similar to that. It wasn’t what I expected.
Also, if you’re interested, I recorded a cover of one of his songs many years ago after a church group protested military folks coming back to my town from the Middle East. I go by dawson70 on YouTube. You’ll have to scroll a little bit since I’ve posted a number of things since then, but I’ve been a fan of John’s music since I first heard Jack and Diane on the radio in 82’.
I have an addon called Soundtrack that lets me implant mp3s into WoW and play them at triggered times like boss fights or in certain sections of a raid/dungeon
