Coiled Isle first impressions

Cursed Surges

The event themselves are fine but I dislike the timing of them. I appreciate the trying out new things with the 45 minute in between surges. My feedback on that is that it feels too long and too odd of amount of time between spawns. I’d prefer if they were 30 minutes.

The other issue with them is that outside of fishing and world quests they are kind of the only thing going on the surface. So it feels incredibly off-putting to go between the vaults of Atal’Utek to the surface to snag a cursed surge then go back down. This is exacerbated by when going into the vaults you will get dismounted even if your mount is on the ground while entering it really feels like it breaks the flow and doesn’t feel cohesive.

Patrols

I have to say I dislike these a lot. Going to right-click an npc in random places to kill 6 mobs or gather 8 things or talk to a few guys. But these objectives you can do anywhere in the zone once you’ve accepted it. So why did I have to go to that specific npc on patrol for it? It feels awkward and unnecessary. I’d personally rather these not exist as it feels like more bloat than anything.

Strikes/Incursions/Ancient Foe

First thing I got to say about these (and patrols) is that there are way too many terms the game is throwing at the player. Getting a weekly to tell me to do a patrol and a strike and an incursion and defeat an ancient foe. It is nice you can ask the npc to explain what these terms are. It just feels unnecessary that so many of them need to exist. It feels like the incursion and ancient foe should have just been merged and strikes are fine on their own then remove patrols.

For the content itself the temple strikes were fine. I liked the incursions almost reminded me of mini-community events. The ancient foe I wish rotated, I assume they don’t cause I’ve only killed the same one so far. It kinda feels stale when it is the same one every time. Side note I will say I think that is neat that the map shows that there are active players in the area.

I have mixed feelings on the vaults in general. I kinda like that we are in some dangerous territory but it kind of feels like the mob density can be too high in places. I do like the tornado things being able to take us away from mobs though.

Rewards
Corrosive coins is a neat concept so far. I like that they can be used to gain power for world content and that this extends to delve and prey. Gaining different buffs and different bonuses in the vaults is also cool. The main thing is I wish the same currency I use to get more of this power isn’t the same thing I use to spend to buy cosmetics. i feel like this is a lesson that should have already been applied.

The mount and pet rewards this patch are cool. My only issue is that there is the really cool flying snake mount that feels like it could be a mythic mount. Then there is the two-headed chimaera looking guy that looks like it would be off a rep vendor but is actually the mythic mount. I don’t know what happened there it almost feels like the mythic raid mount was given the one that less people would want since less people will even get it.

Fishing
I think it is neat whenever fishing or cooking gets big content added every now and then. In the early stages I can’t say too much on this except the fishing rod. It feels like I shouldn’t be fishing for more stuff until after I’ve done enough dailies to max out the reputation because the fishing pole at max is what enables you to get the currency for the cool rewards.

The other thing is I really don’t like that an epic fishing rod was added mid-expansion after adding the grand fishing lure. I know a lot of people didn’t but some people like my crafted the engineering fishing rod and I got the 100k fishing enchant to slap on it. Then it turns out I’ll be replacing it the next patch. Just feels bad. Wish there was a way to transfer it to the new fishing rod.

Second week impressions:

Patrols feel like they could use more variety - which it does have but seems set on a rotation every few days. if they were all in the same pool that’d be more refreshing. Similar case with the Ancient Foe being the same mob and only rotating weekly.

Did the Ral’kala cosmetic farm and that was fun camping and beating up a ghost for cosmetics. I liked that he dropped corrosive coins on top though wished he also dropped remnant of anguish since he is related to Astalor/the prey system via the cures of the isle.

The nerf of the cursed surge achievement was nice (though could have been more). I wish cursed surges awarded corrosive coins similar to ral’kala (if a ghost who is only above ground gives it why not them?). At the moment the only incentive to do them is the weekly quest if one does not want to work towards the achievement.

I like the faster pace of the Vault vs Curse Surges outside (which at the end of the day I’m probably not gonna do after first week because pacing and rewards to me are simply worse than the vault), moreover some of them could get a bit of nerf like the spider one as breaking a 100 eggs takes a bit of time. I like having a bunch of small activities and that killing mobs feel rewarding.

The power ups could use more… power options could be more plenty. I feel it wouldn’t have hurt to have 2-3 more damage nodes. Same as the codex could eventually offer more than 2 options at some point, let’s say you can get 3 options at the same time when you fill the tree.

Unlocking some way to travel between the vault and outside would also be nice at some point, I like the design of flying in and the speed is fine but maybe let us use the teleport potions outside of the vault if we’re on the isle.
