Class Tuning Incoming – Tuesday, August 13

We’re working on the following changes to several specs, which will go live with scheduled weekly maintenance in each region.

Please note that these adjustments are in testing, and we may add, edit, or strike them between now and maintenance. As always, we’ll let you know here if we make changes to the changes, and we’ll post the final numbers in our hotfixes update immediately after maintenance.


  • Death Knight
    • Frost
      • Damage of all abilities increased by 5%.
    • Unholy
      • Damage of all abilities increased by 5%.
  • Warlock
    • Destruction
      • Damage of all abilities increased by 5%.
  • Warrior
    • Arms
      • Damage of all abilities increased by 5%.
  • Developers’ notes: Arms Warrior, Destruction Warlock, Frost Death Knight and Unholy Death Knight are generally underperforming and could use a damage increase.
  • Rogue
    • Outlaw
      • Blade Flurry now strikes nearby enemies for 30% of normal damage (was 45%).
      • Keep Your Wits About You (Azerite Trait) now increases the chance for Sinister Strike to strike again by 3% (was 5%), and the maximum number of stacks has been increased to 33.
    • Developers’ notes: While multi-target cleave is an iconic strength for Outlaw Rogue, we feel that Blade Flurry is currently too strong, particularly in Mythic Keystone dungeons. Likewise, the Azerite Trait Keep Your Wits About You provides too much added value to their AOE rotation at only a single instance of the trait. These changes should keep Outlaw Rogues very strong at multi-target cleave, but no longer significantly ahead of other specs.
  • Shaman
    • Restoration
      • Healing Surge healing increased by 10%, and mana cost reduced by 5%.
      • Healing Wave healing increased by 10%.
      • Healing Rain healing increased by 20%
      • Riptide heal-over-time increased by 15%.
      • Wellspring healing increased by 15%.
    • Developers’ notes: In general, Restoration Shamans are struggling with single target healing environments like Mythic Keystone Dungeons and Arenas, so we’re buffing some spells from their single target kit. At the same time, we also feel like they aren’t doing as well in a particular area where they should excel: healing a large number of targets in a small area, so we’re increasing the strength of Healing Rain. Finally, Wellspring is an underperforming talent we feel could benefit from an increase to be competitive.

Player versus Player

  • Heart of Azeroth
    • All Tier 3 Azerite Traits (such as Resounding Protection and Impassive Visage) are now reduced to 20% effectiveness in PvP (was 50%).
      • Developers’ notes: We’d like to see sustained damage become a greater source of pressure in Arena and Battlegrounds, but the passive healing providing by these Azerite Traits offsets much of that damage. We think that by decreasing their impact, we’ll see greater pressure on health and mana pools going forward.
  • Death Knight
    • Necrotic Strike’s Necrotic Wound now absorbs 5% of the target’s maximum health in healing received (was 7%).
    • The melee attack damage and attack speed of the Raise Abomination guardian has been decreased by 30%.
      • Developers’ notes: While Death Knight damage is underperforming in raid environments, they are very strong in PvP. To offset the increases to their base damage, we’re reducing the effectiveness of two very strong Honor Talents.
  • Mage
    • Temporal Shield now has a 4 second duration (was 6 seconds).
      • Developers’ notes: While we like the predictive gameplay of Temporal Shield in response to offensive pressure, we think the duration provides too much protection for a class that should be focused on control and mobility for defense.

Mage temp shield “nerf” is literally a buff vs burst comps because it procs faster??? ??

Can you pls put a store mount to fund a pvp dev team instead of the unpaid intern???

Very nice to see the big buff for Resto Shaman, and am also happy to see a nerf like that for Outlaw.
I am surprised by the buff to DK specs though, frankly!

Hope more stuff like this comes, honestly.
Number tuning, although often looked at as boring, can make a dramatic shift in perception for individual specs, especially in small group content.

Maybe tank DPS is something to look at? :wink:


So instead of 3 outlaw rogues we’re going to have 3 assassination rogues in MDI.



What about tanks? Probably the most disgusting representation seen at high levels of raiding. A quick look at warcraftlogs will show the ridiculous amount of brewmasters going full DPS traits on bosses that absolutely DESTROY every other tank in the game. It’s been like this the entire expansion.

Dubious about the UH DK changes, I guess we‘ll see how it shakes out.

Really would have loved to see some survivability buffs for Disc and Enhancement

Are you kidding me how does Marksman hunter still not get ANY changes to make it playable in arena. Yet Destro locks get buffed when they are 2 shotting people. Wake up devs.


Soo, are you going to actually fix Outlaw’s janky rotation of RNG of RtB rolls or actually make slice and dice valuable again for ST damage since you want to “normalize” rogue AoE damage. Not, like rogues don’t get out damaged in AoE M+ situations either with the likes of a demon hunters, ret paladins or unholy dks yet the same ones who cry about one little burst damage of a rogue.

Warlock has no decent m+ spec. Demo doesn’t even have an interrupt. 0 in the top 300.


No one but outlaw rogue is a decent M+ spec. There will never be room for any other class in M+ because shroud is so mandatory. Class design this xpack is trash legion was a million times better. If they fixed the dungeon design maybe shroud wouldn’t be mandatory and maybe other dps could slide in.

Resto Shaman got some love, thats nice.

Are you EVER going to do anything about Glimmer Paladin and Discipline priest? The other 4 healer specs are all ‘close enough’ in terms of balance but those two are just stupid. They get top tier raid CDs, DPS, and by far more healing throughput than the “other 4”.

I think Blizz afraid to nerf the Meta healers because so many guilds relying on their broken levels of OPness to progress it would halt their progress to suddenly lose so much.


Something I actually agree with. Bloods damage is lacking compared to other tanks in M+. Tanks in general need a tuning pass.

Arcane got a 6% buff at the start of the patch but it was not nearly enough.

See how it plays out. Its not the triple shroud its the ridiculous damage output+utility that was making a 3rd rogue more valuable than even bringing a windwalker for the 5% buff.

A lot of tank traits need to be looked at. Looks at most BDK traits.
