Are any of you fellas interested in watching this movie coming out on July 17? I am somewhat interested because Nolan never tried to adapt a mythology before. He did make a biopic about Oppenheimer (which I disliked), but Nolan seems more experimental than before.
There is controversy about casting, but unlike historical biopics, this involved fictional characters, so imo a black Helen of Troy is the least of anyone’s worries.
IMHO Memento gave him a lifetime: I will pay attention card. So I will definitely get to it at some point. If it is on a choose list, it will get chosen.
Kind of the same with Aronofsky and requiem for a dream.
I have heard there’s controversy over the ‘woke’ casting, but it’s not a reason for me to not give it a shot. It’s Christopher Nolan. I’m looking forward to seeing how he can pull off an ancient tale with a somewhat unexpected casting. I love it when directors dare to tackle well-worn things in new ways.
I am indifferent about Nolan. I could take or leave him. Casting is whatever, people will always complain. Blackwashing, whitewashing, someone will have something to say no matter what.
I’m basically uninterested because of the casting. They went out of their way to be purposely ridiculous. lol

Let’s say the film was animated, the current cast as voice actors, and all of the characters were drawn genuine to the story; would your view of it change?
if they did that I think no one would complain. The only reason he cast those its because he is aiming for oscar and Hollywood change the rules that inorder to win best picture, you need two of four the following things

Why would an animated film make it better? Personally I’m more unlikely to see an animated film, because most of them suck and I’m not 8 years old anymore. And no my view wouldn’t change.

They’re characters that’re from the stories of Odysseus, Achilles and even that of Homer’s depictions (as he didn’t invent the characters themselves) — which have been significant cultural pillars amongst Greeks for over 3,000 years … To the Greek culture, they are historical biopics.

Because at least then the portrayals of the characters would be more honourable to the cultural ethnicities and depictions of what the story was set within and from.
But the casting of Helen is utmost hypocritical of the actress’ former statement made at her tangent rant for the Black Panther movie, when she had a whole speech about “respecting the ethnic history of the cultural setting the fantasy is placed in” — and then she does THIS, and justifies it with the dismissal statement that it doesn’t matter because it’s a fantasy?!? To say she’s a grossly bigoted hypocrite - would be an understatement.

Personally, I like the Nolan brothers. They’ve done good work. Oppenheimer was an amazing movie. Not a fan of Tenet. I understood the premise, but didn’t like the execution.
I won’t watch The Odyssey. I’ve read Homer and he’s probably turning in his grave at this adaptation.

Diane Kruger is no closer to what a woman from Troy would have look like from this period than Lupita Nyong’o.

Unfortunately the imax in my city doesn’t have an imax 70mm projector anymore. They did but when they rebuilt the imax they got rid of it and only have the imax 4k which is inferior to imax 70mm
There are 2 cinemas with 70mm projectors in my city showing it. One with 2.35:1 ratio compared the imax 70mm 1.43:1 so a LOT of the top is cut off. The other is the more traditional 2.20:1 70mm ratio so I might see it there.
All the good seats for the first week or so at the local imax are booked out. Would be good to see it in 1.43:1. Might do both.
It is hypocritical. That’s par for the course nowadays. Controversy sells. You’ll have people watch the movie just to see her fail at the part, then post about it online.
The last new movie I watched was Project Hail Mary. Probably the best sci-fi movie since Interstellar.
Nolan has his favorite actors and that’s going to hurt him in the long run. IMHO

Then to conflate “olive skinned” with “black”… they did the same thing with the True Blood series. I read every one of those books and Tara was Olive skinned. Olive skinned means more gray and tanned, almost khaki. Not black. Now if we were talking about Andromeda…I’d have no issue with this actress portraying her. Andromeda was from Ethiopia. So the Clash of the Titans movies have Andromeda very poorly casted.
Helen of Troy was said to be so beautiful that her beauty launched a thousand ships to rescue her. I don’t see that with this actress. MHO
