Haven’t seen one feral take chomp in any build.
Yes, thank you
Chomp is fundamentally at odds with how the spec plays. It is borderline impossible to play the spec such that you would get enough value out of Chomp to make it worth taking. And by playing that way, we would be gimping our damage everywhere else to eliminate whatever gains you might see from being able to press Chomp. It would need to deal like double the damage as it does today to make it a mathematical win to play.
As a pvp player feels bad to drop moonfire in cat form for chomp, no way I’d do that. If it wasn’t a choice node and if it had a more forgiving threshold would be nice.
Simply a question of tuning is why we don’t take it, if it did more damage than other talent points we’d take it, it doesn’t so it doesn’t get picked.
I don’t think Chomp was ever actually intended for “competitive” levels of play
It’s for open world/delves where people aren’t playing Feral properly and constantly energy depleted.
You know, the folks who play Feral like Ret and Fury Warrior
This is a vast oversimplification of the dynamics at play with Chomp in particular. Yes, if a build with Chomp dealt more damage than competing builds, it would be played. But it’s also true that if a build that blindly took all talent points left to right and top to bottom until we ran out of points dealt the most damage, players would also play it despite not taking a single capstone and only 2 penultimate talents.
The problem for Chomp in particular isn’t just a tuning challenge, it’s a fundamental spec design problem. The flow of the spec revolves around building to 5 CP then pooling before pressing bite. If building to 5 CP happens to drop us below 30 energy and we get to Chomp, cool. But oftentimes, we won’t naturally drop below 30 energy. In order for Chomp to overcome the opportunity cost of other capstone talents, we would need to find ways to unnaturally dump energy, which would be a damage loss as we either build inefficiently or we continue to build after reaching full CP.
The ability simply doesn’t work with the flow of the spec, at least not to justify taking as a capstone. Yeah, if Blizzard made it deal enough damage to overcome the damage loss other places to make it work, it would be played. But the reason they need to juice the ability so far in order for it to be considered is because it simply doesn’t fit the rest of the spec.
Perhaps, but I wouldn’t expect such an ability to be placed as a capstone. Then again, I don’t know how Lunar Inspiration ever became a capstone, either…
Its a lot of damage for what it does.
And we naturally fall below 30 energy quite a bit
And this from folks who understand the energy saving/spending focus of Feral.
Now imagine players who dont play energy game properly and just spam on CD. Its a strong ability, it’s a great finisher (especially a FB → Chomp combo).
Its great for Delves and open world, and a wonderful capstone for those players
It took me so long to get used to, “No no no, don’t hit rip yet.”
Idk, having a ranged cp generator is so good that chomp would have to do broken damage for me to take it over LI.
