I’ve encountered a lot of brain-dead stuff with Classic over the past few years, but this takes the cake. Seriously Blizzard, who are you hiring these days?
If you attempt to create a character with a name that is taken, and this happens for ~5 names in a row, the game prevents you from creating a new character. “Creation of that type of character is currently throttled.”
How am I supposed to know what names are available if I don’t try them??? How does this make any sense??? Does development work today by asking ChatGPT to provide a list of the stupidest possible ideas that could be implemented, and then choosing one at random every few weeks?
Hmmmm…the times I’ve seen people discussing seeing that prompt, it didn’t revolve around character naming. Rather, it came from people trying to create a Horde character on the TBC Classic Anniversary Nightslayer PvP server, which has a faction balance mechanism.
Blizzard didn’t want the PvP mega-server to become grossly faction imbalanced, so it throttles character creation for the majority faction. For the Nightslayer server, the majority faction is Horde, so players find it difficult to create new Horde characters on that server.
Probably trying to make a horde character on Nightslayer, for that message to pop up.
Has nothing to do with the name. Or it would say that name is unavailable. Unless of course, they changed it for some reason. So it says that instead of the name being unavailable.
If you get the “Name unavailable” message 5 or 6 times in a row, your next try will get you “Creating of this type of character is throttled” - or some such.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with creating hordes on a realm where it’s limited, or where you have already an ally character, but everything to do with trying to come up with a name that’s not already taken.
It’s like writing the wrong code somewhere, you’re barred from any more tries for a time. I tried it twice now (creating an Ally character on the Anni PvE realm where I had already more Allys).
It’s not forever. I don’t remember how long I had to wait to try again, but I did create the character both times, only later.
Again, correct. Anyone can test this. Try to create a character with a name that is taken, several times. Maybe it is 5 attempts. Maybe it is 8 or 10 attempts. Regardless, Try 10 times, and then choose a name which isn’t taken. You’ll see this error. Then wait 20 minutes and try again. Character creation will succeed.
You used to be able to try 10, 20, 30 times, and would just get “this name is unavailable” or whatever. This seems like a new thing Blizzard introduced in the past 6 months.
I’m finally trying classic and having this problem today, it’s awful. I can confirm it has nothing to do with what server you are on or even how many characters you make in a row (I just made 16 characters in the past few hours on two different servers, some in quick succession). But I did get locked a few times and finally figured out what causes it. I even waited a few minutes before trying each new name to see if I was just entering them too fast…nope.
Turns out it doesn’t matter what you do, even if you spend 5 whole minutes between trying unavailable names. After 4-5 “that name is not available” it just auto locks you, for about 10 minutes, from making a character. How on EARTH am I supposed to find out it’s taken without trying to create the character? There is no “Check availability” option for names in classic.
Pretty unbelievable feature, and just…crazy lazy of them. Not to mention it doesn’t even keep spammers from making many multiple characters in a row. I made 5 in a row very quickly just getting lucky with not taken names. So it’s terrible for actual players AND does nothing to prevent spammers. Yikes.
