It turned gray while selecting character features? What? 
A blue post to give us some clarity on the matter would be appreciated. I just resubbed and trying to get my discord server (a full community) to reroll on Alliance Grobbulus and the alliance faction is grayed out.
I happened to notice when I was idle in the character select screen for a while, the alliance option popped up. I foolishly clicked back and went back in and it was grey again. So, I’d suggest sitting on the character select screen for a while and see if it works.
Okay, another update. I sat idle in the character select screen until I got disconnected. When I logged back in, the alliance character select option was available. If any of these things mean anything or not or just complete randomness, I do not know. Just passing on what I’ve experienced to help anyone else that has been having this issue until Blizz fixes it. I can’t either. So frustrated
Been having this issue since Cataclysm Classic released (Didn’t play TBC nor WotLK.) I can’t make Alliance characters on Grobbulus despite having Alliance characters already. Like Razérus mentioned, Idling at the character screen works, but only sometimes. I’ve made my two Alliance characters this way.
When opening a ticket, their response was linking me to this thread without any other information. Doesn’t seem like this is a priority, so who knows when it’ll be looked at or fixed.

I’ve finally figured it out!! I had to delete ally my horde on the server and then it allowed me to create unlimited alliance toons! That can suck for some. I had a 66 UD priest but also have a 52 human priest on ally so =/=. Hope it works for you guys too!
what a garbage company imagine paying for a game where you cant create new characters to play with friends
I have no character on Grob and alliance is greyed out for me anyway. That’s weird. I wanted to switch on Grob because I heard good things about the server
Same is this ever going to get fixed and or is there a work around?
It’s ridiculous that this is still an issue. Can’t make a new toon unless I don’t want to play with any of my friends, and am just raid logging on my main because there’s nothing I really need to be doing lol.
Not an issue or an accident. Done intentionally to maintain faction balance on quite literally the only server with any semblance of faction balance for US PvP.
Already been addressed, not a bug, stop crying about it.
