Anyone else have a floppy disk assigned to them for the computer lab?
I think of myself as a particularly solid typist, but if I was just in combat I cannot get coherent keystrokes out. Itâs as if my brain needs to swap the muscle memory template. Been like this for a long as I can remember.
I have an old keyboard, itâs small so I keep it even though all the letters have worn off the main keys.
Iâve been typing so long that I have muscle memory so if I have to find the letter A or something, I canât look at the keyboard because I wonât find it but my hands can.
Iâve gotten faster because of gaming but I was fast before.

A long time ago I was a high school teacher. I worked in the computer labs and part of my curriculum was to just let students âtextâ each other using instant messengers. Youd be surprised at how good they got in the few months that they had me.
The downside is I had to have a âno leet speakâ rule in place. If you typed in âuâ or ârâ for a paper, you failed that paper no matter what. In the 10 years that I was a teacher, i jad something close to 2 dozen super seniors that had to retake one of my classes because of this.
It doesnât help that the folks are running off as you type, not that they canât hear you, it just adds more stress to typing legibly and quickly.
âGuys, hey guys!â
Note, I counted, I made more than 10 typos typing that. I made more than 5 typing this line. lol
monekytype at 125⊠but getting older have seen a significant drop off.
I actually just took a typing test recently and clocked at 123 words per minute. Which is impressive considering everything.
I tyoed thus wutg nt etes cjusedm
(I typed this with my eyes closed.)
My current job literally hired me after they made me take a typing test from that typing website lol. I started the next week haha
Typing tests are still a thing? I had no idea.
I learned typing in middle school where legit I remember the teacher putting paper over our hands so we couldnât look at the keys. And, if the paper fell off, we had to start over.
It was harsh - but I donât ever have to look at a key board now <.<
The website still exists, but this was back in 2017 that I got hired.
Iâm gonna go with a solid no on people being good typers from gaming. Then again itâs always amazing/confusing when someone types an entire sentence mid fight without skipping a beat.
But still, some of the sentences/delays I see in team-based communication are just astonishing. Maybe they can type fast but they sure as heck canât type anything coherent half the time.
The one game that helped me type better was Maplestory, when that game was a social hotspot lol
I type well, but Iâm slow⊠and I second guess just about everything I type before I send/post.
I can type decently quickly and touch type but thatâs only because my Mom made me learn.
Thanks Mom!
Gradeschool did the thing where we had some cardboard over our hands so we couldnât cheat and look down. And some speed typing games.
Kinda funny cuz it freaks mom out that I can look elsewhere while typing.
MMOs have done my typing more harm than good. Theyâve instilled all sorts of weird trigger reflexes that cause me to reach for random keys when certain thoughts cross my mind.
(not that my typing was particularly good to begin with)
