Can we get some clarification on the updated policy?

I’ve read through everything in here, I do appreciate the help. Now that I am caught up I’m glad the consensus is the wording needs to be more clear. I think all of us realistically understand the intent of the change but are understandably cautious about doing anything involving gold right now because of the way it is currently worded.

Thank you to Vrak for answering these questions on a Saturday. I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Trading Items and Services for Real Money - Blizzard Support

  • A player is selling game codes for gold
  • Response: If you want to buy or sell a WoW item, use the in-game trade window, the auction house, or C.O.D mail.

This did not sound like it was explicitly disallowed. I felt like the “common problem” in this case wasn’t directly addressed, which was really frustrating with all the recent US-only promotions. Hint: I’m EU.

But you cannot put a code into the Trade window is the point, so therefore not allowed. The code is not an in-game item. What the code becomes once redeemed could be an in-game item. If said item could be traded, then that should be fine as it would be able to go through the trade window.

It’s the first line in the article:

"You are not allowed to buy or sell WoW items, products, or services for real money. "

A code is considered an out of game item.

If the code were redeemed and the item could be traded, that could be sold in-game. The response line is basically saying… if it can be put in a trade window, auction house or through the mail, you can trade gold for it with another player.

I’ve always figured that trading any out-of-game good and/or service for in-game gold fell under the umbrella of RMT. Even though there’s not real world money involved, there are things with real world value involved.

but in true blizzard fashion, they swing wildly in the other direction and overcorrect. This is just going to hurt people with multiple accounts, I guess I’ll shut my others down since that’s the only reason i have them - to trade with myself. (all on retail) I’m not going to risk a ban because I’m trading with my level 10 twink. Or with a level 10 bank alt, etc.

Does this mean that cross realm guilds should not be helping guildies with their gold needs for repair and consumes by giving them gold? The way it is worded makes it unclear if it’s full ban on all cross realm gold trading regardless of reason.

Just keep playing the game as you normally would. It would be silly to prohibit something that is natively supported by the game.

A huge problem with this is that it will hurt players doing nothing wrong.

The huge problem with that is when Blizzard bans, you can’t appeal or even talk to a real human being about it. So when this happens, you’re screwed. Even if you did absolutely nothing wrong and were just trading with yourself legitimately.

Please keep this thread to questions and clarification on policy. There’s a thread in GD if you want to give opinions and feedback. This forum isn’t that place and I don’t want to see an informational thread devolve and get locked.

Bans are not given out by AI.

Use the Warbank for gold across your own characters. There are no issues with it. No one has lost gold from it, no bugs, I’ve been using it since its inception with zero issues.

Blizzard doesn’t use any AI. Nor does customer support. So you have nothing to worry about there.

Additionally, your concern about sending an alt money is clearly not an actual issue as it’s not in the “Common Problems” section. You’ll be fine sending your own alt on your account gold. Additionally, you can use the warbank for such things.

Multiple accounts dont share the warbank. So if I want to give my 10 bank alt all my stuff to dump in my guild bank, I’m risking a 20 year old account to do so.

And risking losing it to a ban that isn’t possible to talk to a GM about, let alone get reversed.

You absolutely can. No, you’ve never been able to ‘talk’ with the team that handles appeals. That’s not changing.

We have this same question. Based on what I’ve read in here the answer seems to be “the in-game system allows it so go ahead”. That being said, because of the way it is worded we have communicated out to not be helping out until the wording is clarified.

I’ve tried to scan through some of the replies. Just for clarification. My wife takes most of my gold in retail, same realm. Is this now prohibited? I make a lot from professions and give it to her so she can buy BPs, Mounts and whatever else she wants off AH.

There shouldn’t be any issues as far as I am aware. Modern WoW Guilds are cross realm/cross faction, so normal systems are used. This tends to apply to swapping gold between realms, factions, game types that don’t otherwise allow it from inside the game.

Trading gold on the same realm has never been prohibited, and is not being prohibited. If you wish to continue giving your wife gold, then you’re fine to continue doing so.

From what I’m getting out of this:

  • If the entire trade can be completed easily using in-game tools without jumping through hoops to accomplish it, it’s fine
  • If you have to jump through hoops or use a “middleman” to facilitate the trade, this is what’s prohibited

Indeed.

Basically, if it’s a supported transaction (i.e. using the in-game systems to trade) it is still a supported transaction.

If it was an unsupported transaction (i.e. swapping gold between versions of the game or other realms/factions, etc…) it is prohibited now.

It’s written like such, because every bad actor will try to rule lawyer it.

As part of the EULA, Blizzard has final arbitration, and for policy changes like this, it’s so players can’t “outsmart” such.
