Doesn’t Revendreth use Blood Magic? Which, from memory, is a darker form of Life magic.
Blood magic has historically been described as ‘tortured’ life magic, but the Venthyr do not seem to outright practice blood magic. It is more the color of the anima they extract and use is red, so it seems like they do.
(Commentary): I’m uncertain to be honest. No alpha access, for one thing. However, we’ve seen demons very interested in torture, and that’s basically Revendreth’s M.O. Fel magic itself is produced as a result of the ritual destruction of life energy, so in a way, torturing souls to extract their anima feels like a strong thematic connection to demons.
My running theory now is Fel magic’s rather equal opportunity on what it uses as a fuel. Your typical Warlock might only use life energy, but more advanced Fel magic used by the Legion in its magitech? It’s actual base fuel is likely anima produced through endless torment of captive souls, much akin to the Maw. Which actually helps explain why we see Demons roaming the halls of Torgast.
(Query): Isn’t anima a form of Life Magic?
If I recall, after we blow up the demon ship in the Second Battle of Broken Shore, the souls being used by it’s engines were released and were wondering the Broken Shore. Anduin’s quest there has a detour where he helps release those souls into the afterlife.
I think it’s technically Death magic. A soul isn’t technically alive, after all. It’s also not just a soul, but all of the experiences condenced into magical form.
Souls I think fall under Death magic. The only ties to Life magic I’ve seen are in the reincarnation department.
It is called Death Magic, by the game. In reference to things we already have it would be more akin to the ‘soul magic’ that the Drust use, and the magic the Draenei were/are so handy at, that let them bind their ancestor spirits without the pain involved in being a ghost normally, and to make the Vigilants.
(Commentary): According to the wiki it’s the resource used in performing death magic, but Anima itself isn’t death magic. It’s the accumulated experiences of a mortal soul during it’s lifetime.
(Speculative): Makes one wonder if the souls of long lived races are more highly valued. Would a Night Elf or Draenei shop keeper who’s done nothing but tend to their shop for 10,000+ years technically have massive amounts of anima compared to… any human?
Something like this which fits well with the Tauren culture being a mirrow from the natives of north america:

Besides what is wrong with a more Horde centered place? We already got Shadowmoon Valley recycled in Ardenweald with nelf motiffs, Maldraxxus being a more green scourge zone and vampire zone screams of San’layn.
