Building a new PC (partly to run WoW)

The fact that you can pick up the 9900k for $300 probably isn’t helping either

I got my Intel processor through my work with employee pricing it’s a not for retail processor. So obviously I still have it since I can’t sell it. So reselling my 5900x would actually make me some money. Knowing that isn’t helping me at all

CPU and GPU parts that is currently shortage can be found if you look around more. I managed to get 5900X on first week and RTX 3080 one and the half month later on preorder. Plenty of CPU and motherboard forced bundles available here.

I had the opportunity to get a 5800x back in early December, when I was following the Stonks discord for my GPU. But I passed on it after watching a bunch of videos basically showing now real improvement except for 1080p

Some shops here did not even list the parts online. You have to go to the shop to buy it. At least it guarantees you don’t get bots.

Unfortunately (which is strange since I live in a bigger cities in CA) I have almost zero chance of any local places to get hardware. It’s Best Buy, and that’s it. Even Fry’s is closed (not like they ever stocked stuff anyway)

Looks like you gotta go elsewhere if you gonna go to the shop. US is big.

The shops at my area is becoming either greedy or smarter. From some sort of forced bundle to full rig. It steers some scalpers and bots away.

Yeah, I will just pay extra or wait. Not worth the time or gas really. Unless its saving more than a couple hundred bucks.

I will sell you my motherboard and processor if I go back to Intel for retail pricing. You have everything else you need.

I have the x570 Crosshair Hero Viii wifi. The best part is you wouldn’t have to pay sales tax on either of them. Once you factor that in they are both actually cheaper than retail

I visited Microcenter a few times during the last few months to look at the NZXT H1 and to see if the corsair sf750 is in stock and there are always a line of people waiting for rtx 30x0 cards and AMD cpus. Last time I went was during the fire and there were four guys lined up outside waiting at like 4pm. Honestly you aren’t missing much with the crazy crowd existing in Orange County.

Newegg and Applepay got me a ftw3 3080, but it was heart wrenching with OnTrac delivering it to me. They came at midnight and started banging on my front door. Happy that it arrive but why the banging lol

I’m waiting for 11th gen at this point. But thanks.

Well, I can confirm that I was able to get the 5800x no problem from the Micro Center by me. This thread has been a big help for changing up the build to be probably as good as it could be, so the original post is kind of obsolete by now. The new specs are up in the air aside from the CPU, GPU, and RAM.

To recap, I am currently working with a RTX 3080 GPU, AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, and 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB Memory.

I’m thinking I may go with an ASUS ROG Strix X570 of some variation for the Motherboard, and then most likely an AIO cooler from corsair, perhaps 280mm.

I have been recommended both a 750W or 850W PSU at this point, so I’m not quite sure what to go with.

Storage-wise I’m going with a 2 TB HDD, and torn between a 500GB or 1TB NVME.

Lastly, for a case I’m thinking a Corsair Airflow 4000D, but if there are any other recommendations for relatively cheap I would appreciate it.

Case:
More of an alternative to the Corsair 4000D
Lian Li Lancool Mesh II and Fractal Design Meshify are in that region.

PSU:
Super Flower has a 750w for ~110 and a 850w at 125 on Newegg. I believe EVGA uses Super Flower for some of their better PSUs.

Storage:
A regular sata type ssd would work just fine unless you do a lot of data transfer type work. Why not go for a 1tb sata ssd?

Alright, I’ll look into these suggestions, thank you for the tips. I appreciate the help you and everyone else has given as well as thought put in by everyone.

I was looking at the Lian Li cases, but was dissuaded by a friend who said he’s not a fan of them. I personally liked the design of the cases and they seem to have good airflow which is most important to me, as opposed to flashiness in a case like the Corsair Crystal 570x for example. The main reason I looked toward an alternative for the 4000D is because the case would require buying 2 additional fans to install, which I don’t mind but, due to having bought the 5800x as well as the 3080, and still needing a solid motherboard, I’m trying to save money where I can in order to remain close to budget. I’m gonna check out that fractal design for sure.

I’ll also look at those PSUs, and then with the Storage stuff, the reason I wanted to go with an nvme - which I assume is what would be replaced by the sata SSD - is because WoW isn’t the only game I’m planning run, and in some of the AAA titles like Cold War, Destiny 2, Cyberpunk, etc. I’d like to reduce load times as much as possible, which I heard an nvme is best for, albeit not by a huge margin.

I will still give the Sata SSDs and everything else you recommended due diligence and research since you were kind enough to take the time to give a genuine list of recommendations, so I would prefer not to discount that at all.
