The swords were made from the fragments of Frostmourne. So yes it did have something to do with it.

Under that impression as well!

During the Vol’jin chain, he talks about Sylvanas messing up the balance, then sends us off because we don’t belong there. Then he summons a bunch of weak ghouls to get us out. But he doesn’t kill us–no scheming that I noticed…as of yet.

My understanding is that the were there at Sylvannas’ behest.
