So I love BM and always go BM and my DPS seemed okay given I only just got back into WoW 2 weeks ago after being away a year. I think I get maybe 500k to 700k DPS.
However, I wanted to try Lone Wolf MM and hit up Icy Veins for the talents and didnt even look at rotations and spamming my buttons Im getting 1m to 1.5m DPS.
I can only assume this means Im doing something very, very wrong with BM ?
Different damage profiles. MM has more burst followed by longer periods of less damage, BM has less burst but more sustained damage.
You don’t mention how long your tests were or how many buffs you had or whether it was single target or multi target or if your secondary stats are better suited for one spec or another. It all makes a difference.
All things being the same, over 5 minutes my dps in both specs is roughly the same. If you’re doing good tests over time and you’ve ruled out gear issues then it could be a problem in your rotation just hard to say with the info you provided.

Its Time Walking and questing so the mobs dont have a lot of Health. So BM would be better in M+ or Raids, but MM is better for any of the quick stuff?
Cheers.
Yeah generally you’ll see MM performing better in those situations, because it can essentially “save up” dps between pulls, and has shorter offensives you can use more frequently.
Over longer periods of time they are tuned about the same so for Raids and M+ this difference in damage profiles is not usually noticeable.
Of course, tuning is never perfect and there’s always a mathematical best. Sometimes it’s BM, sometimes it’s MM but for most players it won’t matter you just pick the one you like better.
after playing UH DK and Warlock Aff and Shadow Priest, I find MM refreshing with the front loaded damage profile.

For questing it feels quite insane. Obviously with BM there is zero chance of death, but MM feels like it kills twice as quick and has near zero downtime.
It is because you are using pack leader with bm and dark ranger on mm. Dark ranger got high initial burst then damage evens out as target gets under 80%then starts picking back up in under20% “execute phase”. If you run bm with dark ranger you will se similar burst dps and probably better overall dps if you are bit overstocked on haste.

Icy Veins had Pack Leader for Delves - because Im not into M+ or raids. If Dark Ranger has burst I would have thought it would have been far better for Delves because its really only the final fight which goes for more than 20s or 30s.
I will check out Dark Ranger next time I switch to BM.
Cheers.
Mythic + build overall is way to go for majority of wow content.

So the Dark Hunter version of M+ is the build I should be looking at for both BM and MM?
Cheers.
For bm dark ranger was dealing more damage in my tests , for mm i personally prefer sentinel due to damage absorption bubble, trueshot cooldown reduction, dot and slow it applies to targets . But damage wise dark ranger and sentinel are close with dark ranger being easier to play due to way sentinel works.
But blizzard is doing major rework to mm and quite few changes to bm things will probably change next patch.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I think Im happy with Dark Ranger given how quickly things die. I think if I go for more difficult content I would look at Sentinel.
Cheers.
Pretty sure ops spec is an issue based on anotehr thread
As others said, against short-lived targets, MM’s up-front burst is going to win out.
Also…just wait 'til you see what Survival is putting out right now. Holy cow.
