It’s strange to me that a gnome can be both a rogue or a warrior, but a blood elf can only be a rogue. What was Blizzard’s original reasoning behind this design choice? Was it because the race already had a lot of classes available to it? If so, what class would you drop to make room for warrior? Or is there a lore reason behind it all? The inconsistency has always bothered me. Lol
I think it’s mostly due to BEs already have so many class options. If they were allowed to be Warriors, the only classes they couldn’t be are Druids and Shamans.
I don’t think any other race has that many options.
I think it was a technical limitation back then as each race only had 6 class options maximum.
They could be Warriors I believe in original Beta but were replaced with I think Hunters.
It was between Rogues and Warriors.
Blood elves do not have the strength to weild big two hand weapons. Paladins can only do so because… magic
I recall an anecdote when TBC was coming out that the answer to this is simply “because every race can be warrior, this will make them different in that regard”. Instead they gave them another class option. lore wise I can see it simply that elves, blood, night, and high, are all intuitively magical races, so I can understand why they wouldn’t have developed a fighting style of pure physical prowess. I think it’s more so the gnomes that are the odd ones here and should have been given some other class option instead of warrior
We can do everything but range DPS…!
That reminds me, I’d really like a Holy range class lol.
I always thought it would have been cooler if BEs couldn’t be Warriors AND Rogues at launch, so they could only be classes that used mana, since they’re quite fond of it and all.
Trolls. They can be everything except for paladin or druid.
What a shame, since the Horde already had plenty of hunter races…
Since all four original Horde races can be hunters, unlike the Alliance, I think hunter could have been a great candidate for dropping in favour of warrior.
Little gnome arms can, though. Somehow. Through the power of… science? (Engineering?) Lol
They can’t be Warlocks.
Oh, true. I forgot about that. My bad.
No worries, I had to Google it too:

technical limitations
lore-wise, it’s easily explained due to the blood elves’ over-reliance on magic (with an understanding that rogue abilities are described in lore as a form of magic, thus their access to them) and it takes a while (say, an entire expansion) after the cleansing of the Sunwell at the end of TBC for them to really get over their addiction enough to seek “new career paths”
Hmm. That lore explanation does neatly clean everything up. Lol. Thanks
If we ever get a Cata Classic server then it could happen.
Yeah, I think Blood Elf Druids over rogues would have been way cooler. Could have had the Lynx as the catform, dragonhawk as the flight form.
Blood elves are too frail to be warriors.
What about Gnomes?
Sturdier than blood elves.
I would’ve figured all the punting would’ve tenderized them…
