I’m currently 3179 rated and I’ve tanked all dungeons on +14 as Blood DK. I’m struggling to hold threat at the start of pulls and sometimes even throughout pulls and if I die and get resurrected I cannot regain threat on anything. Blood DK has too much button bloat and needs a rework. I’ve taunted Xav for example at the start of the fight, pulled him to the center of the room and used Death’s Caress, a Ret Paladin on my team ran up and used his judgement and took aggro and died instantly before I even used my heart strike. I shouldn’t be losing threat after taunting + death’s caress.
My abilities should generate more threat. I don’t even mind the button bloat but as a tank I shouldn’t have threat issues.
Did you pull Xav with taunt? Why not just pull with Death’s Caress into BB into Marrowrend. Assuming your San’ylan, then pop DRW, BB, Consumption, HS Spam. Mix in your DS, and you shouldn’t have any issue with threat especially on ST.
AOE, depends on when your group goes off on gather, and how you are starting. I tend to start with Deaths’ Caress and drop a DND on the back behind as im gathering, then plant, DRW, BB, and go from there.
Proof that you can get a high rating and still not even know how to play your class properly…
I’m flabberghasted if this is real.
Caress has like a 19% AP scaling and it was the only button you are claiming to have pushed after using taunt. When you taunt you have 3 seconds where any threat you generate is boosted by like 800%? It’s a large amount, regardless, and you choose to push the absolute weakest button we have in our kit and you complain about aggro.
And that’s me assuming you used Dark Command and not Death Grip, because I’m fairly positive Death Grip doesn’t have the 3 second threat modifier attached to it.

Do you not understand what Xav is? I was pulling it to the center of the room so I taunted and then death caressed because it was walking towards me but one of the bad melee dps ran up to it and died like an ape. I had no runic power because we just skipped the miniboss. You’re acting like I was standing ontop of the boss and had full runic power lmao.
edit: I’m also flabberghasted that you think I’m high rated. I appreciate the compliment because I’ve only started playing this Season 4 weeks ago and I’m completely new to Death Knight. I’m currently working on my +15s and I’m 3220 rated. I’m still struggling with threat. It’s only when a DPS is really dumb and hits something I don’t have aggro on yet or isn’t grouped yet into my DnD.
There are some massive pulls that I need to do and people don’t wait for them to group up for my DnD and Bloodboil and then take aggro at which point I’m forced to run around trying to hit everything with my taunt, both grips and sometimes even have to run over and death strike/heart strike a mob because DPS cannot wait.
My threat issues are compounded by bad DPS focusing the incorrect targets as well. This will sometimes force me to have to run over to a mob and try and death strike/heart strike to get aggro on it and then somehow I end up losing threat on my previous target because I’m no longer hitting it and 2 DPS are pumping every CD they have into it. My issues mainly stem from bad DPS players but I still don’t think I should have any threat issues if I can place a DnD down on a pack and blood boil it.
For example the subject rats in Motherlode: I’ve had 3 packs of them ontop of my DnD and double blood boiled with my dancing rune weapon up and somehow I’ve lost aggro on 2 of them and have to try and taunt grip through a wall of nameplates.
So to reiterate: You pushed Taunt (Dark Command or Death Grip has yet to be determined), and pushed our weakest ability while standing still (instead of walking the boss backwards while pushing Heart Strike or Blood Boil) letting the mob run to you. An argument can be made that the DPS started attacking prematurely, but the point stands that in the 3 second taunt window you are not doing anything aside from a single global to generate threat and it’s literally the worst button you could have pushed.
I’ve been playing a Fury Warrior all tier and consistently have to wait 5-6 seconds in AoE before I can Recklessness/Ravager otherwise I explode because I didn’t let my tank get stable aggro. If DPS don’t give you time to get aggro that’s a them problem and not exactly something you can fix.
There isn’t much you can do about aggro in the stated Motherlode pull, though, when an uncapped AoE decides to press their buttons. DnD/BB may hit everything, but Heart Strike is only hitting 5 in DnD. You can’t realistically maintain aggro on everything as it would require cycling through every nameplate weaving Heart Strikes and praying it cleaved to targets it hadn’t hit prior.
Ive mained blood DK since the start of the expansion, one thing i will tell you is Death’s Caress doesn’t generate a ton of threat. Think of it like old wow days if i look at my current DC (death’s caress) it does a whopping like 45k dmg. that’s like throwing a pebble. Threat generation comes from death and decay. and getting heart strike/vampiric strike out as fast as possible usually by selecting dancing rune weapon prior to a large pull, as this is your main source of damage/cleave. all taunting does is generate a high amount of threat, it doesn’t mean it still cant be stolen from you.
DK’s in my experience are one of the only classes with a pre-pull rotation.
mine consist of
rune tap- vampiric blood
followed by
D&C- Deaths caress ( to generate bone shields)- blood boil ( for Dot appliance in AOE)- Corruption (to make Dots tic faster) - then ill cast dancing rune weapon followed by vampiric strike/heart strike spam.
if its single target, anything you can do to get dancing rune weapon and vampiric strike off at the start of the encounter will ensure you maintain aggro. but its also a DPS responsibility to not crit the boss for several million dmg before you had a change to smack the boss lol
i dont push 14’s i just do my weekly 10’s but you can hmu on discord @avagantamos if you want some help
I’m tanking +17s and still having threat issues. Blizzard needs to make a change at this point because it’s becoming pathetic. Not only am I the worst tank in the game but I have the worst threat out of every tank. I didn’t have this problem on Guardian Druid. I don’t always have Abom Limb or Dancing Rune Weapon up for the start of every pull. Even with Dancing Rune Weapon into a pull I struggle with aggro on the yellow mobs in dungeons like the patrons. I’ve had multiple DPS complain about my threat even after I heart strike cleaved and double blood boiled with dancing rune weapon to spread 3 dots on all of them and they were in my DnD and I STILL LOST AGGRO. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??? FIX DK AGGRO ISSUES PLEEEEEEEASE. It’s so bad man, really it’s awful. The pulls that I don’t have DRW and I go in with DnD and then double blood boil, I still lose aggro on some of the mobs. I’ve had my fire mage friend pull a rook guard off of me after I was cleaving it for 10 seconds straight and hit it with every ability. I’ve had so many deaths in my runs to DPS just getting blasted because they run into a pull after me. There are pulls where I literally have nothing at all to deal with stuff. For example in Cinderbrew Meadery, the charge guys drop 2 droplets and I can’t always get them without running over to them and I risk dying each time I do it and even then with blood boil and DnD someone takes aggro off me. Then there are the bees that spawn in Cinderbrew Meadery for the Bee Boss and holy crap is it bad as a DK. Like wtf am I supposed to do? My range on all of my abilities isn’t good enough to deal with them while being pushed back and being forced to drop a puddle to the outside of the room. When I see 4 bees spawn I just want to uninstall the game. My death grip isn’t even back up from the last set and you want to me to somehow get aggro on 3-4 bees with no abilities? Wtf? How am I supposed to also deal damage to the boss and keep myself alive wiithout using DnD and then being forced to sit on my runic power and try and run to a bee and death strike it or heart strike it, just awful. Fix Blood DK.
Generally I pull with dnd and then depending on runic power and bone shield charges it will determine what I do next. But death’s caress and taunt aren’t my go to spells for threat.
What is your BDK that is tanking +17s? Im just curious.

Unless there was a change somewhere, all that taunt did was put you at the top of the threat table while forcing the target to attack you for a duration.
No real need for a threat increase when you get put at #1 as a threat priority.

It’s the first expansions I cam’t play BDK at all. Threat sucks; RNG burst as a tank sucks; big chunk of dmg built into an RNG target cap DS; and the worst is the DS nerf which makes this class so clunky to play.
If you are having threat issues with Blood, with blood being the 2nd best tank for damage output on average, then you are doing something wrong.
Someone who dont play the game telling people they are doing something wrong, this guy is a joke in every thread.

Because Warcraft logs doesnt exist right? And it is showing that Blood DK on average is the second best tank in terms of damage output.
And at this point, this is like stalking with you.
There isn’t a single tank spec that doesn’t have some threat issues right now, except maybe warrior.
There is some responsibility of the DPS to manage their that.
Let’s bring back threat meters!
It’s true that blood dk has some issues with establishing threat the first few seconds when the DPS are impatient (read as DPS are bad), since a lot of their damage isn’t frontloaded. Blood plague ticks for a lot of threat, death and decay helps by ticking damage, and blood beast takes a few seconds before it explodes for huge amounts of threat.
Once they’ve established threat they won’t lose it though, unless they decide to pretty much go afk.
I do think they need gorefiends grasp to aoe taunt though, would help them out a lot.
As for OP it’s a learn to play issue anyway, he wouldn’t have lost agro if he did deaths caress > taunt > marrowrend > hearth strike > hearth strike.
OP is claiming he is Top 100 BDK in the world. He’s disappeared, so he was either trolling or wildly exaggerating his key level.
GG needs to be on a shorter CD for it to be an AOE taunt…would be great if that was 30 seconds.
Dps isn’t translated to threat mechanics. VDH’s dps is fine but its threat sucks.
War, bear, paladin are fine with threat. They all have consistent uncapped AoE with big frontloaded burst.
Monk is a bit clunkier because the kegsmash’s radius, but it has 10s cd AoE taunt.
So the tanks currently have threat issue are BDK and VDH.
