I’m not sure how they could redeem her. The whole fractured soul thing still means she was in some form of control over her actions. It’s not like her body was being borrowed by someone else.
If they re-instate her over The Forsaken, then I will truly be upset with them. If they turn her into some wandering adventurer, fine whatever. Just cut her out of the story in some sense.
An entire species wants her dead for what she’s done. An entire faction even. Hell, her own faction doesn’t want her. You’re going to tell me Baine is going to say something along the lines of “It’s ok Sylvannas it wasn’t you all along?” If he does, it’s bad writing. Even for a video game.
Me resting easy would be knowing I wouldn’t have to see that annoying character anymore for a while. Ideally I would have liked her to be gone permanently, but that was never on the table. I’m just so tired of her always being there.
It’s not surprising they wouldn’t kill her off. I know for some people, anything short of that is unacceptable but unrealistic.
The writers have to thread a needle of acknowledging that the character has crossed a line that they can’t come back from while somehow keeping her relevant to the story and it has to be something more than one character saying, “I’ll never trust her.” And another saying, "I know, but we need her help with this. "
As for the people who have an irrational hatred of the character and / or writers, all I can say is, go touch grass. This is all make believe and if you are so emotionally invested in the story that it ruins the game for you that they won’t kill off one character you don’t like, you need a little perspective.
I hope it’s in 9.2.5 or at least build up in the future. Keep her away from 10.0 please. I would rather have the main story revolve around Kobolds than her.
Yeh, exactly. She’s been a huge part of the last few expansions. If they are going to keep her around, for the love of everything, please have her go off somewhere and leave us alone for an expansion. Let the story focus on OTHER characters.
You sure about that sir? Seems to be the opposite.
How can people love a character who has done so much wrong? Accepting the writers “write-off” of her is akin to blindly fan-boy’ing. The writers have to convince us she doesn’t deserve retribution, not tell us and expect us to believe it.
FFXIV is going through the same issue right now with Endwalker. Plenty of folks are upset with how you’re spoon fed reasoning that doesn’t seem right. Just because it’s written/explained doesn’t mean we have to accept it. And I can see how a lot of people would have a hard time accepting anything short of banishment for Sylvannas.
I’m pretty sure Khadgar will return for the void, we’ve been seeing a strange crow in the Shadowlands for some time now. But yeah, she’s done. We need new characters and build around the characters that haven’t been huge lately.
There are lots of examples of a character that is “bad” that people love and there are characters that are intentionally made to be unlikable.
Either way, I’m not a big fan of storytelling by committee. I didn’t like how the Dark Tower series ended, but I didn’t write Stephen King and demand he change it.
At the end of the day, it’s their characters and their story and they can do what they want with them. We’re just along for the ride.
Perhaps Danuser resides in an alternate reality, and copies of his writings appear in a inter-dimensional mailbox. This alternate world is one where the fans totally buy his redemption arc for Sylvanas, and he’s so thrilled the fans of that universe are behind him. We got a copy of an interview from the universe as well, one where there is some level of excitement and this isn’t a total lie.
Side-note: I’m glad at least one person on the community council is talking about the lore. There’s been a ton of focus on systems and I was kind of worried Blizzard would going to live in their little echo-chamber and convince themselves we liked the overall arc of Shadowlands.
While I was out touching grass, the thought occurred to me that some people are authentically incapable of abstract thinking.
A person with perspective understands that having impassioned negative views about certain aspects of a game you love does not equate to being unable to have an overall positive relationship with it.
*Fills a pit with perspective soaked grass and tosses Lunkel into it…
Related note, I think its cringe when people tell others what is or isn’t a legitimate reason for quitting the game. Lunkel may be able to stomach the terrible lore, but if it ruins the fun for some people, then it is what it is - people should absolutely not feel obligated to keep playing a game if it is stops feeling fun for them just because Lunkel doesn’t agree with their reason for quitting.
We play games for fun, if it stops being fun, then it stops being worth playing. Whether the terrible lore makes the game less fun for someone is their opinion.
I think absolutely that people are allowed and entitled to feel however they feel.
Sincere players of the game with longevity often go through a broad tangent of emotions with the game, from enthusiastic to toxic, and back again, multiple times over. Not one of them is unjustified to feel how they feel.
It’s your game. Do it the way you do it. Feel about it the way you feel about it. Whatever someone’s sentiments, and however those sentiments fluctuate along the way, even when venturing towards the extreme, it all still 100% falls under the umbrella of ‘you’re doing it right.’
There is no faster or more effective way to ensure I’ll lose respect for someone on a personal level than when I see them pompously ridiculing others for having a strong negative sentiment and reaction to something.
It’s the equivalent of having an Argus sized, flashing neon sign nailed to their head that says ‘idiot.’
I’m not talking about someone who dislikes Sylvanas but otherwise is ok with the game, I was talking about people who act like their entire experience is ruined because blizzard won’t cave in to their demand to kill the character they don’t like.
That’s not quite what I was saying. If you are unhappy with the story and quit, that is one thing. If you are unhappy with the story and threaten to quit unless the story is personally tailored to what you want to happen, that is another thing entirely. As for the lore, it doesn’t bother me because I don’t think it really has changed that much over the years. If it wasn’t common knowledge that there was a new writer, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between the story before and now.
