After that first interview where Chilton and Afrasiabi were talking about the “wait and see” approach to flight starting with WoD, it was clear as day that the goal was to slow everyone down. I don’t need them to admit that now purely because my ego demands it; I knew it from the start because it made perfect sense.

Given the opportunity, players proved overwhelmingly that if you just put it all in there at once and let them have it with no restraint, they’ll snort it non-stop like it’s the last bump of coke on Earth and then be bored within a few weeks.

As bad as the time gates are from a PR and business perspective, people cancelling for months at a time because they absorbed everything as quickly as humanly possible is also pretty bad. People cancelling looking for something else to satisfy their addiction could just as easily never come back.

That is a myth. Were you playing WoW in Legion and BfA when Pathfinder was finally released? Did you notice how there was a significant uptick of people you saw out in the world, or just seeing more people in the game in general?

Gee, I wonder why that is… Maybe it’s because making it more convenient to be out in the world makes people come back to the game and go out and do stuff out in the world. No that would be crazy!

People cancel for months at a time because there is no flight yet. It makes the situation you described worse.
