You dont need to be optimal to clear content, indeed. But if both you and someone else who is optimal applies for 1 single slot on a group. It will not be you who will be picked, for there it will be no benefit for them to do so.
People speaks about competitive as if everyone is trying to be world first, then forget we compete for something as small as a group slot.
