Blizzard app background download causes WoW lag/FPS issues

I have been having an issue now for at least the past few months, where in WoW (and by extension, Overwatch), where I am getting what looks like really bad FPS framerate issues (or graphical lag for a better term). I have done so many troubleshooting steps (clearing cache files, running disk checks, clean graphic driver installs, making sure all drivers are up to date, etc.) to no avail. The ONLY thing that “fixes” it is if I completely close the Battle-dot-net/Blizzard app when I’m playing your games (or at least WoW and Overwatch - Have not tested the rest of the games I have on the app). I can play Fallout 4 fine in ultra settings with no FPS issues that is not without my own doing (i.e. overbuilding a settlement, which their game engine cannot handle).

What I did last night was I fired up Task Manager and put it on my 2nd monitor while I Played both WoW and Overwatch for about 1-2 hours. The thing I noticed the most was that “Blizzard Update Agent” was running up about 50-60% of my CPU usage. I thought, this is crazy, I thought I have the setting of “Pause Updates when I launch a game” enabled - as well as “Never Automatically Apply Updates”.

So Blizzard, please tell me what you can do for me, to fix your application? I built this system in late 2016, so it’s not THAT old that it should see these types of performance hits. Aside from updating my CPU from a 4 core to an 8 core, which I will be doing as soon as I get the money, what else can be done, other than continually closing the Blizzard app after I launch your games?

Also I tried to paste my latest dxdiag, but it’s over 99k characters…

Hey there,

That is definitely a bit odd that Agent is using your CPU to patch/download while you are actively playing games. Since the setting doesn’t seem to be working it could be that there is an issue with the Battle.net install, so I would recommend that we try clearing that out completely.

  1. Uninstall the Blizzard app (via Control Panel or Start → Settings → Apps)
  2. Press Windows key + R to open the Run command
  3. In the Run window type %programdata% and hit Ok
  4. Delete the Battle net and Blizzard Entertainment folders
  5. Reinstall the Blizzard app

Once the app is reinstalled it should scan for games and detect the games you already have on the system, but if not you may need to manually locate the games. Double check your settings as well to make sure pause updates in the background is enabled.

Try testing the game again and watch the CPU usage just as you did previously to make sure Agent is not patching/downloading in the background.

Before I completely remove the App, would it matter if I already cleared out the cache completely for it? Or are you thinking there could be corrupted files for the app?

There may be corrupt files for the app install itself, so not connected to the cache. Give it a shot and see what happens.

Im having this issue for the what looks like a heroes of the storm backgourns download and the new bfa 8.2.5, ive tried the above mentioned fixes, still doesnt seem to wanna work properly, any other fixes out there?

I am also having this problem.

It stems from agent.exe sucking up ALL of the bandwidth it’s able to get its slimy claws on.

HELP PLEASE
