I understand that there are idiots in the US/in other countries. It is up to society to conduct and enforce morals and life ethics on its own populous, That is why freedom of speech is important. We give idiots the right to speak, while also giving us the freedom to call them out. It’s a working system that alot of people can stand by especially if its the only means for them to call out injustices
The state of society is bad right now but it will improve
Yes, the action of blizzard exemplifies this
this is why government intervention is necessary
Best try to find the balance between capitalism and socialism
they can work together well
Uh, people in the west do get threatened with death for wanting the freedom to marry who they want. Or to practice the religion they want. Or to identify as the gender they are on the inside. Or to get birth control options.
Oh, you’re talking about the government? Well, plenty of unarmed black men getting killed because, for some reason, cops are so very scared of them.
I don’t like to toss around words, especially this one…
… actually, I won’t. Perhaps you’re not quite aware of what you’re actually proposing.
Anyway, your idea is terrible. It runs contrary to the concept of freedom of speech, a pillar of liberal Western civilization (which, last I checked, included Australia).
Actually, I don’t think Australia has anything regarding freedom of speech in its “constitution”. Unless something similar got grandfathered in from the Westminster system.
Yeah, must have been all over other stock drops that forced blizzard into rescinding the prize money, and reducing the ban.
As for the social media, you’d be amazing what you can learn if you actually stop talking and listen for a change. The price stock I quoted was from the actually Blizzard stock prices.
I get that you think you are an intellectual, but stick to trying to impress your highschool friends and leave the adults to talk.
Can we shift the discussion to how steep the penalty still is for those involved? 6 months seems way to long and that’s the price companies need to pay for overreacting so early. Make it 1 or 3 months. It feels like communism over here.
Nope, Australia does not list “Freedom of Speech” in our rights. It is “implied”, but since it is not set in stone, that right can be taken away at any time.
If you break the rules, then you should feel the punishment. If the punishment was nothing more than a slap on the wrist, then people would break rules, left, right and centre.
It wasn’t in the rules. Blizzard didn’t do this because of a rule violation, they literally did it because someone leaned on one of the world’s biggest economies. They even admitted it and the only reason they went back -slightly- is because of this massive blow up thread over it.
“And rights aren’t rights if someone can take ’em away. They’re privileges, that’s all we’ve ever had in this country, is a bill of temporary privileges.”
I worked in retail loss prevention for a while, can confirm this to be the case, in my county there are so many homeless people and so many petty criminals they would never have any room to house any shoplifters at the county jail, basically regardless of the value of their theft. You know what this translates to?
Every apprehension I had (and I had a lot) was nothing more than an introduction. I got to catch them, watch the cops write them up, and then basically send them on their way and tell them better luck next time. Also served to let them know what I looked like to make it easier on them on their next attempt which there ALWAYS is. They always come back, why? Because there is no real punishment.
You take your ticket, you go to court, you pay your fines and do some menial community service. In the mean time you keep stealing to make up for it, why? Because there is no real punishment.
In my opinion, you take what you earn and earn what you take, but society doesn’t seem to reinforce this concept. You do as many underhanded things as possible to advance yourself and keep up a facade of innocence. That’s the way of the world.
So have you contacted your representatives to complain about the fact that neither Hong Kong, nor Taiwan are recognized by the US as independent nations?
Here is the list of countries that recognize Taiwan as independent. No one, not even Hong Kong, considers themselves independent.
Chinese President[ Xi Jinping ]warned on Sunday that any attempt to divide [China] would be crushed, as four months of anti-government protests continue in [Hong Kong] and the [United States ] ramps up criticism over Beijing’s treatment of Muslim-minority groups.
“Anyone attempting to split China in any part of the country will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones,” he said during a visit to Nepal on Sunday, according to China’s state broadcaster CGTN.
Prize Deductions and Standards of Conduct. (a)Grandmasters players will be held to the highest standards of personal integrity and good sportsmanship. Grandmasters players are bound by the standards of Player Conduct outlined in Section 6 of the Handbook, and the rule infractions and penalties outlined in Section 7 of the
10 Handbook. In addition to the foregoing, the following conduct will reduce Grandmaster player prize totals by the following amounts (prize totals cannot be reduced below $0 USD). All prize deductions will be decided in Blizzard’s sole discretion and are final and binding once communicated to the player receiving the deduction.
Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damage’s Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player’s prize total to $0 USD, in addition to other remedies which may be provided for under the Handbook and Blizzard’s Website Terms.
The ruling was probably done by NetEase as they are the ones handling Blizzard games over there as well as the initial statement. After the backlash US Blizzard most likely worked to reduce the punishment.
I don’t see anything wrong done. The only reason people “care” is due to the topics and China and I doubt they actually care whats going on in HK. Declaring support for a revolution can offend innocent Chinese players who just want to watch Hearthstone and falls under “offends a portion or group of the public” if they view China favorably. Honestly if all voices matter than the Chinese gamers matter as well right?
Blitz broke the contract which he admitted to and Blizzard has every right to control the topics they allow on their platforms. He was not silenced as his message got out there but that is not free from consequence.
This has escalated so beyond what actually happened. The hypocrisy of outrage youtubers profiting off this using a platform that actually censors users.
Americans and the American government are making their voices heard when it comes to American companies bending the knee to the Communist government in China … what Activision-Blizzard has done.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE), alongside Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), and other Members of Congress, today sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressing concerns over the league’s response to Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey’s tweet in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. The bipartisan, bicameral letter also warns of the threat capitulating to Chinese Communist Party censorship sets for free speech among other multinational groups and corporations.
The letter states: “ Unless American businesses aggressively confront this intimidation campaign, the Chinese government will increasingly punish free speech outside China’s borders. The most common method is to threaten access to the growing Chinese domestic market for any international company or organization that criticizes, or allows its employees to criticize, Chinese government policies. If not resisted, this pressure could result in American and multinational companies making employment conditional on silence regarding topics deemed sensitive by the Chinese Communist Party. This is an outcome that Americans reject, and one that you should reject – especially given that the NBA represents a unique brand for which there is no competition, inside or outside China. You have more power to take a stand than most of the Chinese government’s targets and should have the courage and integrity to use it. It’s not unreasonable to expect American companies to put our fundamental democratic rights ahead of profit — the very rights that have fostered their success and our nation’s wealth. ”
The letter, also signed by Reps. Banks (R-IN) and Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Sens. Wyden (D-OR), Cotton (R-AR), and Cruz (R-TX) calls on the NBA to have the “courage and integrity” to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party, and outlines four steps the league can take to uphold its commitment to “addressing important social issues in the U.S. and around the world.”
Activision-Blizzard deserves all of the shame being thrown their way. They chose to be openly political in their decision and stood by that decision in a statement released on a Friday afternoon at COB. Good luck with that Activision-Blizzard, you bent the knee to a government that harvests organs from people who are alive, puts people in reeducation camps meant to strip them of culture and religion and punish them if they don’t comply, and medically-induces abortions in women against their will.
