Has this thread set a record for most posts in the General forum? Over 20K. That’s pretty impressive.
I think maybe you mis-typed something here. The agreement between UK & China says China will have total control of HK by 2047. It says nothing about allowing HK to secede, only that they shall remain autonomous until 2047. I think our western media isn’t giving the true picture of what HK is fighting for. If you watch what the protesters who have been interviewed say, they are fighting for freedom. They are willing to die for this cause. They know when 2047 comes, they will be slaves to China. They have enjoyed many freedoms under UK rule that they will never be afforded under China’s rule.
The police brutality we have in America is not good. However, it is not nearly as bad as what HK is experiencing right now with women & children being beaten to a bloody pulp on subways where they cannot escape. Or having expired tear gas canisters (which have become a form of cyanide) thrown at you.
Sadly… we don’t agree. All media is political, and you really can’t separate them or if you do, games will suffer for it. Extra Credits did an excellent video on the topic that I’ll link.
Thus this shouldn’t be about keeping politics out of games, but what politics do we allow? In my view, as somebody that actually believes in free speech… all of it.
The HE threads still probably beat it, but close!
Yeah, I miss-typed that, fixed so it makes sense.
I saw that rando YouTuber as well and his video with the HK interviews, funny how all of the interviews of the pro China people aren’t being shown, but that’s another thing entirely.
I thought that his video highlighted how he, like many Americans only now realizing that there is a larger world out there, gets about as much facts correct as you’d find on Reddit or 4Chan.
Has anyone really thought about the Gamer cost? If Blizzard speaks out against China (which some people what) millions of gamers who enjoy Blizzard games will have that enjoyment removed from them.
Thats where I unfortunately need to disagree. If we allow any and all politics within games/movies/etc that opens a whole new rabbit hole. Now you can have someone come up and say something racist, sexist, etc but have the fall back of “I can say anything”. I agree to a degree that we shouldnt remove all politics from games. However allowing all of it allows for lots and lots of bad behavior and also puts Blizz investments in jeopardy as different countries have different cultures. There is also the fact that I fully and wholeheartedly believe that any company has a right to remove a player, caster, producer, etc if they express their political views (especially those that put the company in danger) on a company stream/twitter/etc. Now when companies start firing people for posting their views on their personal social accounts thats where I have a problem. Yes we can say that Blizzard has had political statements shown on stream before, and this is true. However comparing that to the situation in HK is VERY different. The situation in HK is a very complex issue and on top of that unlike other views that have been expressed on the companys streams (views I believe dont belong there as like I said before I believe no political views should be on a company stream ever) Blitzchungs statement actually put company investments, jobs, etc on the line. Regardless of our differences btw I do want to thank you for being civil and respectful despite our differences. There have been some… unkind people recently
Sounds more like a Chinese Govt problem than a Blizz problem to me. It wouldn’t be Blizz that restricts the games, but the Chinese’s own govt.
I mean sure, go with that argument.
I’m more concerned with the Taiwan employees who would suffer as they wouldn’t have a job. Also concerned with the employees here who would lose their job as well.
But hey, let’s get everyone fired if it means we get to stick it to the man right?!?!?
I was going to mention the employees as well but I decided to focus on the Gamer side.
Where have you been the last couple of years?
People been getting fired in America for sharing their political/religious stuff online. Look closely at your terms of employment for your job, especially any job you’ve gotten the last couple of years. They shiftily added in a moral clause and another clause focused on how employees behave and how it reflects on the company they work for.
Oh of course. If there is one thing I have learnt it is that people will delude themselves to believe anything and everything they want to believe. If you told some people that Blizzard Taiwan employees would have suffered some may probably reply “Its a necessary loss” or “Sucks for them”. In this political climate people are willing to lie, cheat, steal, etc for any type of fame
I mean, there is a huge pro scene in that region for Blizzard E-Sports.
I know a lot of Americans don’t care for Blizzard E-Sports, but that aint true for a lot of the region.
Oh I probably should have worded that better now shouldnt I have lmao. I meant that I personally have issues with certain companies that fire you for posting your personal views on your personal accounts. I know many do that as well however thats why I have seen loads of twitter handles saying “The views on this account are not the views by the company” or something along those lines. Then again Thousands of companies do this and its something I need to just get used to. ![]()
I’m not worried about who’s problem it is I merely expressing my concern that the Gamer will take the hit.
You are right, and there is a the rub. NONE of this actually helps people beyond making people feel good about themselves, while there is great potential for harm.
The American way, protesting for freedom in other countries without respect to the consequences of those actions.
China (and many countries) believe in sovereignty, what goes on in their country is their business (America is the same way mind you) and they don’t take kindly to outsiders telling them what to do.
The more people push, the tighter China will squeeze.
The most anyone can do to China is go after its economy and since the Western world is dependent on China’s economy (at least going by the dozens of scholarly articles written by the experts) this isn’t going to accomplish much.
It’s why you haven’t seen any serious government response from the states, the EU or nations in the region. So goes China, so goes the world. #2 economy collapses, we are all screwed.
I am of the opinion that people can and should be civil with each other even if you disagree regarding politics. I mean yes, it sounds like we disagree on the free speech issue, and yes I know many would consider me on the extreme end of it. To say a favorite quote… “The true test of one’s commitment to free speech comes when others are permitted to say and publish ideas they deem offensive.” Thus I have a real problem with Blizz engaging in political speech while they ban others on their platform for engaging in political speech… especially when it appears to be a politically motivated banning.
Also I don’t think a lot of people really understand the depth of what China does, and the “50 Cent Army” China employs really muddles the issue. There is zero doubt in my mind quite a number of posters in this thread are part of that army.
Oh for sure. People on both sides of the argument have been throwing crap at each other without really looking into the matter. Like I literally got downvoted to hell on Reddit because I said people should wait for the full facts of the matter and actually research before doing/saying anything. And Ima say it again here. As far as I am concerned I dont care what side of the argument anyone stands on but if you dont understand the subject and cant start civilly you need to get out ya know what I mean? I despise people who try to just firestart for the sake of getting a few extra seconds of fame and some disgusting sense of pride
You lose any form of credibility when you say this. People don’t agree with me so they must be plants by the Chinese.
