Anybody interested on what happened when Chinese protested British rule during the 20th century?
Saving you some of the suspense… yea people died.
Being pro-Democracy is one thing. Being blindly * anything* is another matter entirely.
What if I was to tell you that the thing that started these protests was the extradition bill that was being discussed that would have given Hong Kong a means by which to extradite people to any country, not just a few.
With me so far? – because you knew that already.
What if I told you that the reason they were discussing it was because a man from Hong Kong took his pregnant girlfriend to Taiwan, killed her, then snuck back before anybody realized? He can’t be tried for murder… because he can’t be extradited.
That, you probably didn’t know. Where’s her Democracy?
For bonus points, name one other territory that does not have an extradition process with its own parent country.
Is anybody following the situation in Iraq, a Democratic country?
The whole point of this post wasn’t to say Democracy is bad, or good, or to say that we’re wrong, or right about supporting whatever cause we choose.
– it’s to show that some political situations are more complicated than we think and should be handled with some level of delicacy. If we paid Blizzard enough, they could say “yea we’ll only serve non-Communist countries,” maybe they wouldn’t have done that… but we don’t. They have to serve whomever buys their product and they’d probably do the same if someone took it upon themselves to declare the USA to be an imperialistic tyrant country that should fall (or something to that effect). Politics and games are a dangerous thing to mix and there’s no forum for discussing them here.
