The US trained, armed and supported the Taliban against the Soviets not that long ago in fact. Then the US aligned themselves with Saudi Arabia, a nation that, in that region, is well known for being rather evil. This was seen as a betrayal by the Taliban which set into motion the events leading to 9/11.
