Sure, but they left in far greater numbers after the no-flying announcement. It’s not a “narrative”. The (old) forums had never seen such carnage, such bile and vitriol and so many “I’m done” posts, friends who’ve been subscribed since 2005 immediately unsubscribed, well known community figures quit the game and have never come back, and so on.
Blizzard back peddled on the idea within DAYS. That’s how bad it was. Stubborn Blizzard, having spent the best part of a year deciding how best to break the news, wound it all back within days with Ion saying “feedback matters” because of the subscriber carnage.
Sure, WoD was terrible anyway, but the no-flying announcement triggered the biggest player revolt the game has ever seen.
No matter which way you try to spin it, reaching max renown NOW on alts is a grind, and you can bet real money that the grind continues in 9.1.
Unless you’re happy to mindlessly spam dungeons all day in the hope of getting renown catch-ups, you’re in for days and days of GRIND. On every alt.
Compare that to the pre-Pathfinder system of just paying a token amount of gold on every alt at level cap.
And there you go. GRIND. A pointless wall stopping your alts from flying until they jump through the assigned hoops.
Whether YOU think it’s “fine” isn’t really the thing, though. If this turns out to be true, I guarantee you that a vast number of players will NOT find it “fine”.
This exactly.
It’s the fact that they DIDN’T talk about it. In past expansions they’ve always specified Pathfinder would unlock flight account wide. This time the only thing they mentioned was mounts.
People quite rightly DO NOT TRUST Blizzard on the subject of flying. They’ve tried lying and obfuscating on the subject multiple times, complete with forum “spin” from staff (remember Bashiok’s infamous “I rode around in Outland then realised I’d forgotten I even had flying” forum post?!) and from players with suspicious motives (hell, the whole narrative that “flying is bad and Blizzard regrets ever adding it” arrived that way).
We simply cannot trust them on this subject. I’m sure if any of the fan sites had bothered to ask about it now during the dev interviews, they’d have been told “we’re still deciding what to do,” a la WoD.
