I have 400+ toys that Blizzard has in fact just given to me. It seems doing so was not good for their brand when it comes to your shallow one sided opinion as you do not seem to appreciate it at all. You are so focused on your opinion and feelings about them selling a toy you have lost all objectivity.
On the contrary. Fortnite became a billion dollar game and you don’t pay a dime to play it. You CHOOSE to pay for skins and that’s it. Same with League of Legends and both have larger esports and larger communities than WoW.
It’s kind of funny to me though. With all the microtransactions and other types of spending methods these games try to get you to spend on them. I’ve found i spend less than ever on games.
Eh, these sorts of programs are mostly about giving fans some agency over the prize pool. Nothing else, the events are fully funded at a level blizzard feels is reasonable based on the marketing value they deliver (which is really all esports is, from a financial pov).
To be fair, its a VERY high quality toy. Best 10 bucks i think i ever spent on wow. Deff better than any of the mounts. My only complaint is, since its a cash store toy, the cooldown could stand to be a little lower. I think 30 minute cd would be fine.
Personally speaking - hell no - I’m not supporting their e-sports for them. I don’t even like their e-sports. However, if they want to sell a toy for $10 and someone else wants to buy it to support it - all the more power to them; it doesn’t bother me.
However - I also don’t expect to have their advertisements about it rammed down my throat. We’re not at that point yet - so I don’t see where there’s a problem, but that’s just my opinion on the matter.
I’m not going to support a tournament like this when a solid chunk of my “support” goes into Blizz pocket because “reasons”.
Your tournament, your game, your prize pool Blizz.
Edit: Actually I changed my mind. If players did buy the pet BUT there was a survey for what dungeons with what affixes (at an actually impressively high key level, no more easy key levels like the last MDI) totaled up like a vote and the teams had to play those player-defined dungeons, I’d support it.
They’ve been doing something like this in StarCraft for a few years now and nobody’s batted an eyelash. Now it’s an issue? Nobody’s mad that a portion of OWL tokens and Twitch passes go into funding the Overwatch League. If you don’t want the items, don’t buy them?
I get people not being interested in these items, into e-sports etc. but I don’t get the rage over this at all.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying “Hey, here’s an optional thing you can buy. They’re pretty nice quality. Portions of the proceeds go into funding the e-sports prize pool!” Maybe they, as a company, can’t budget a huge prize pool and are giving the players the chance to get something cool and contribute to it. If you’re an avid e-sports viewer or even player then I suspect you’d be down for supporting in this manner. Clearly most wow players aren’t into wow e-sports (myself included), but this artificial rage is silly to me.
There’s better things to be upset with regarding this game than a toy in the cash shop.
Not a few years, I think wcs 2018 was the first yearly cycle they did it for. That said, yeah not only does the starcraft community accept it, they asked for it. However, in that game, they are largely pro-esports. Yeah, it’s not a sub game, but I don’t personally think that’s a relevant factor when it comes to giving players some agency over the size of the prize pool.
Esports is a boondoggle. It has done more to screw up this game for normal players than any other single reason. The Starcraft esports scene sprouted up organically. It was player-driven. Blizzard just assumed that they could force the same thing with MDI. It’s not working.
Starcraft Broodwar grew organically. SC2 esports did not, just to be clear. SC2 even saw the introduction of esports licenses where you need permission from blizzard to run an event if the prizepool is above a certain threshold.
