BG forums lounge (Part 1)

I’ve had much less enjoyable gaming experiences the last two expansions.

This is the first expansion since I started in late wrath that I haven’t pre ordered.

I really f-ing hate rng gearing, a lot. I don’t mind not getting a drop from a boss, but at least I know what is possible. But the consistent doubling down on rng and obvious abuse of addictive mechanics to prey on peoples psychological dopamine bursts just bothers me.

I get that it’s just the way our corporate overlords think of us as consumers and not people, but it continues to feel less and less like AAA gaming companies give an actual sh about players or player agency.

Rant over.

The one saving Grace is they do seem to go in cycles a bit. I wasn’t a huge fan of legion but it was definitely better than this. Mop was also exceptional. I liked wod but a lot of people didn’t and even I recognize it’s flaws. Cata/wrath.

There’s hope. Still haven’t pre-ordered it by any means.

Legit… Started out as a pver with rl friends in classic/TBC. Tried out PvP to fill a slot I couldn’t fill because RNG sucks. Haven’t looked back.

Rip vendors lol

Lol yea like I get making money is important but classic-mop wow raked in dollars. Not sure why they had to transition to some weird system like this.

I think it’s just been a major transition in many companies based on psychological information.

The more companies realized they could get people (especially whales) to buy stuff by using psychological mechanics that invoke dopamine responses (why its like gambling) the less they had to actual care about the consumer besides what they’d pay.

The way facebook, instagram, and other social media companies use the same concepts, from the things they display in people’s feeds to the actual colors they use.

Amazing that psychological research is being used to literally take advantage of us as consumers.

The corporate overlords don’t care about the person, jjst the money they can make now, so even if a company (like blizzard years back) has people who care, they get pushed out for other people (or they change to stay with the job) who will get the numbers.

We are numbers, not people.

And maybe I’m overly cynical, and of course I also contribute by engaging in it via subscriptions, character services (my bnet history is depressing), etc.

That’s my theory at least.

I do enjoy some games though, and some feel at least at like the developers care. I’ve been playing pillars of eternity and it’s fun af. And dark souls 3 and the general soulsborne game.

But even on consoles they release crap games and then say “hey buy this dlc to get what should actually have been released for $29.99 even though you already paid $59.99!!).

Lol naw, you’ve kinda got the basics right. More so being a realist :joy:

Yea the smaller developers usually seems to be more reliable. Pillars is good eh? I used to play the old bg/bg2 games and had a blast so I might have to pick it up.

God this the worst lol… One of my favorite games out there is Stellaris but man the amount of dlc they expect you to buy to have a complete game is mind boggling. Same with the civ games. Didn’t buy the recent one after what they did with civ 5. Great game but costs 300$ by the end if you bought all the dlcs as they came out :expressionless:

If you know bg/bg2 at all its really fun.

RTS with active fighting. Lots of pausing to engage your team right. Good story.

Was on sale on steam a while back. Need to finish it to get into poe2 which is supposedly even better.

I also like playing hard modes in games (though I’m not playing it on the one save game you die you die level) and it’s really engaging in that way. You can and will lose fights if you don’t direct each member of the team well and time things, etc.

And choices matter in the game which I love.

Honestly one of the best games overall I’ve played in a long time.

Divinity original sin was awesome too (and that one is coop).

I haven’t liked an expansion yet under the current powers that be. Grindfest, same pair of pants 5 times, dailies that become wow life instead of just adding to wow life, professions that have been neutered to useless.

Waiting for Bonfire Studios to kick something out. Pardo (the real heart and soul of wow) says they are coming up with an mmo. Info limited though, he’s being very cagey with what he supplies.

Definitely one of my favorite aspects of games when they manage to do it well. Had high hopes for swtor but your decisions kinda were fake important lol…

Yup love that one (didn’t play 2 yet). That was a hard mode game if I ever saw one. I actually couldn’t beat it on the hardest difficulty lol… One of the few games I had to turn down. Too many punishing fights lol

Bleh what’s the one game on steam… Playing on Ironman with the dlc was pretty savage too… Don’t think I ever one. The alien game where you move your troops up turn based style… Mind blank.

If you liked divinity give pillars a shot (when it goes on sale if you’re like me)

Google says some g2a site has it cheap but I have no idea it that’s reliable.

Really really good and operates in a similar fashion (combat is active with the ability to pause and dictate)

And yea, swtor has the illusion of it and it’s fun, but the game itself is just kind of a wow space clone.

Now you got me ready to go play pillars when I get home in ~an hour

Hey there!

I’ve been looking at both Divinity and Pillars. Was wondering if you thought one better than the other or better to pick up first. Them, along with a game called Pathfinders seem similar from what I watched. The only games I’ve played that have any similarities to those are the ARPGs like D2 and Grim Dawn which I like to a point but would like something more to it that just go out and kill everything type games.

Hey!!

So here’s my opinion.

They’re very similar yet different games.

Divinity is straight turn based, the game stops in a fight, moves are based on initiative (like d&d), and it goes from there. Varied skills available and talents, but of course in hard there’s a path to follow for ideal damage.

It’s also coop which is super cool if you want to play with someone. Like totally cool. On ps4 my gf and I played and it was great. Single screen when together, split when apart. And the characters have their own identities.

PoE is strictly single player. RTS, so no real turns. You get into combat, the game pauses, you select your next abilities (mage cast fireball, priest cast debuff, tank warrior charge in, etc) unpause and it starts. You can (and should) pause regularly to ensure you are handling the fights and not getting beat down.

Also there’s a super cool class in it called cipher which does physical and mental combat. Hard to compare to wow but like a combat capable (either ranged or melee, your choice) warlock/spriest.

Both games have large chapter based stories with lots of reading (which is great if you’re willing to read) and diverse characters.

Everything matters and is permanent (unless you reload your save). You can steal, kill townspeople, everything. But once they’re dead, they’re dead.

That goes for combat with enemies too. They do not respawn. So there’s no farming.

If I had to go with one for single player only, I’d do pillars first. By a slim margin tbh. My gf and I played the entirety of divinity twice through, and it was awesome. Both games have npc party members with individual stories for you to help with.

Oh yea, and in pillars you get to build up a much better version of the wow garrison and there’s a lot more engagement with it.

And there’s factions you can choose to help or become enemies of.

And now I’m going to drive home and play pillars.

Awesome thanks!

I’ll make Pillars a priority next time it’s on sale (I’m a cheapskate! :grinning:)

I have been leaning that way because of the art style but that was all I had as far as choosing. Ofc if I see Divinity 50% off first I may go that way haha. Single player only is not a problem, most of my steam games I play are anyway.

Me too. I bought pillars 1 (plus both dlc) and pillars 2 on like a super steam sale for I think $55 total or something.

Yes. I just checked my PayPal history and it was $55.16 for all of the above.

But but but the wow chores?!?! Lol

Steam does have awesome sales though so I’ll definitely catch pillars next time it is. Not sure if those sales save or cost me money… Haha

Yeah I usually have the summer sale and Christmas time sales that I’ll end up with 4 or 5. Thankfully they are pretty good with the return policy. I’ve only done a couple that I just thought were way not what I thought. I’d say considering how much time I’ve spent vs the amount I’ve spent left me way on the save side.

Cost. But that’s just me. Sales get me every time. Clearance? Even worse!

Oh man the steam sales are insane… Some of my old favorites for 5$!!! Have a huge library…

Only thing is I would never even have had the game without steam… Smart buggers :joy:

The collection sales nail me pretty bad. Few years ago they offered the entire ID library for a really decent price. I can’t say no to every Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein…

Reputation has been been a gated for content progression/power ups before so it’s not that new, the problem with essences is them not being account wide.

Corruption is 100x better than forging, and corruption is not a carry over feature. I actually liked them doing something quirky theme based. If anything, them removing titanforging is a good sign because it’s the most RNG gamble mechanic, corruption is not as game breaking for 95% of the player base, if you’re not mythic raiding or doing high end PVP it’s really non noticeable. One of my toons has no corruption pieces and does fine. So making item level mean something = good step.

Look at it objectively, the BFA pvp gearing system with the brackets has been a very good addition, better rating = better gear. This is a positive. The counter negative to this it hurts the unrated player, which is a huge demographic in WoW. The unrated player cap reward could be useless to them because of the weekly cache giving them something better than the cap reward, or even vice versa. The RNG reward structure is the problem, which CAN be fixed with the loot table choice for the cache in SL. If they give people structured rewards in PVP then they can fix the problem without vendors.
I personally don’t see the vendors coming back unless they stop the rated players getting better rewards stick, because if vendors were a thing they’d need to have a comb, challenger, rival, duelist, gladiator vendor and it would just be a mess.

As for PVE, the huge problem for BFA was the AP grind (which is promised to not exist in SL so we shall see) and they also overtime made it less painful in BFA.
Other problem is essences, not alt friendly, another promise for alts to be caught up to your main in SL. (we shall see.)
& the biggest problem is/was Titanforging, completely undermining content. A LFR player could get a better piece than a mythic raider etc, this destroyed the games structure. It’s now gone, mythic raiders are back to being the clappers.

When I look at it objectively i’m okay with how things are going, the true failure of BFA to me was actually the terrible content. The main features failed, the system failures wouldn’t be as bad to me if I actually enjoyed the content they gave to me like Legion did. (Mythic +, surumar, Class weapon/hall, Mage Tower)

Ohhh also classes being terrible makes PVP bad, another promised fixed. They laid out everything I want fixed, hopefully they put it all in the game.

Can you point me in the direction of what you’re reading? I’d like to see what they have planned. Thanks.

Time stamp 25 mins 20 seconds, Holinka is the new class design guy which makes me hopeful because daddy holinka is self aware.
